seinen_no: Okay dears, here's the other side to the story and as you can already see, yes, there's some Die and Kaoru again. You know, I really honestly enjoyed (or enjoy) writing other pairings too but these two are just my only true pairing. I can't help it. I'm addicted^^ So, I wish you all happy Easter holidays. I probably won't be much online till next Saturday, so I apologize for answering late :D Have fun, girls!
fonulyn: I have to say that I’m kind of happy to go back to DiexKaoru after all the little trips we made to other pairings XD I did enjoy myself, but this pairing is just TEH thing x) *coughs* Well, anyways, this isn’t high class literature either, like the companion piece isn’t, but I hope it’s nice to read anyways! Also, you don’t need to read the companion fic if you don’t want to, it’s primarily the same story from a different POV and different focus :)
And feel free to
add our journal if you like the stories!
Plus,
the archive.

All the Small Things: I Will Not Go
Toshiya was the perfect fill-in for Kisaki, fitted the band better with his bouncy and carefree attitude. He was always smiling, always had a joke up his sleeve. What surprised Kaoru the most was that it didn't seem to be a façade, but was really his nature. Right now he was talking to Die, the second guitarist. Kaoru tried hard to catch a few words, wanted to know the reason for the shy smile on Die's lips and for the slow nod he gave the bassist. Why the heck were they both getting along so well? Sighing, Kaoru blew the smoke form his cigarette through his nose and startled for a second when he caught a glance of Kyo, their small vocalist, who was sitting next to him.
Kyo seemed to be somewhat disturbed by the whole scene as well, looking at the two with a small disapproving frown on his forehead. That made the lead guitarist oddly content in a way, knowing that he wasn't the only one who wasn't all happiness and sunshine right now. Kaoru couldn't help but to feel a bit bad for the way he was getting all grumpy though, as technically he had no reason, or more exactly no right to be annoyed over this. It wasn't like he could stop those two from getting close to each other, no matter how much he would've wanted to.
The truth was that Kaoru was jealous. Terribly jealous. Ever since he had joined the band himself he had had his eyes on his fellow guitarist, and he had simply been too insecure and withdrawn to be able to make a move on him. And then the new bassist just waltzed into the room and charmed everyone with a single smile, making Kaoru look like a grumpy old toad who was too focused on work and the serious sides of life? That wasn't fair!
An annoyed grunt escaped Kaoru and he didn't mind that Kyo noticed his annoyance clearly. Annoyed beyond anything about the whole situation the lead guitarist grunted again, his voice carrying a clear irritated tone as he spoke up. "Maybe I should interrupt their nice chatting or we won't ever get more work done today." He would've wanted to rather skip the work and simply grab Die to shake some sense into him, if only to gain his attention back on himself. But of course he didn't do that, he had far too much self control for anything like that.
Although Kyo agreed upon his question, neither he nor Kaoru got up to interrupt the idle chit-chat of the two other bandmembers. Only Shinya seemed to be his usual self and reminded Die and Toshiya that there still was some work to be done. All Kaoru heard and saw though was Toshiya's question at Die. "We can talk later, right?" he asked and the smile he received from the redhead could've perfected the sun. "Of course." Die nodded, almost beaming. "We've got all the time in the world."
That was too much for the lead guitarist's anyway thin nerves and he jumped up, took his guitar and strummed a few notes. "So cut the babbling and get to work now." He didn't care that he sounded harsh, played the slave-driver as everybody seemed to expect from him. He would make them work, if only to distract himself room the dark thoughts that had sneaked into his mind. Maybe he shouldn't ask Die to join him on the ride home today? But then, it wasn't a very clever thing to do, right? Even if Die seemed to be having something going on with Toshiya, he wouldn't have to drive him into the bassist's arms by being grumpy and unfair to his fellow guitarist. Quite the contrary, he should do his best and be as charming as possible.
Sadly, one could clearly see whenever something bothered Kaoru as he had never been good at hiding his emotions. At least nobody dared to ask him about it. Or more likely he had never been good in hiding his mood, whenever something bothered him. The reason why he was being grumpy, he was sure, was totally mysterious for everyone else in the room. But if one watched him closely one could see the long glances he threw into the redhead's direction, saw the way his gaze darkened when he spotted the younger guitarist and the bassist exchange a few words once again and even smile at each other brightly.
The day didn't go on forever though, naturally, and at one point Kaoru thought it was late enough to call it a day. Almost as soon as he had dismissed the other bandmembers Shinya was already out of the room, and from the corner of his eyes he saw Toshiya slowly stalking towards their vocalist.
He witnessed them talk lowly and if the lead-guitarist's ears didn't betray him, he heard Toshiya invite Kyo over for a drink. What the fuck was that all about? Did he run with the hare and hunt with the hounds?
Anyway, Kaoru didn't want to bear this awkward tension any longer, didn't like himself jealous like that, and decided to leave quickly. When he waked past the vocalist, he explained that he had an appointment and needed to hurry, but once he had reached the door, he stopped and looked at the redhead. "Are you coming?" If Die now joined him, nothing was lost yet, right? It meant that Die didn't leave together with Toshiya and maybe Kaoru would get an explanation why the two of them got along so well.
The instant answer was a smile and a nod. "Sure!" Die grabbed his jacket, managing to get his right arm somehow entangled with the sleeve and with an annoyed growl he tugged it on properly. Just when he was about to leave the room he turned to look over his shoulder, smiling at the two who remained behind. "Bye. And Tosh, see you later!" He got an agreeing gesture from the bassist, and afterwards instantly followed Kaoru out of the room. He had to take several quick steps though, as the lead guitarist wasn't obviously willing to wait and Die could've sworn he was annoyed again about something. What it was, that he didn't have any idea about, despite knowing the other man as well as he did.
They didn't speak a single word until they were sitting in the lead guitarist's old Nissan, driving along the crowded streets to get home. "So," Kaoru began at one point, purposefully casual, "you're seeing Toshiya?" He was hoping to find out the bassist's secret. What did Toshiya have that he didn't and why was Die falling so easily for him while Kaoru had tried to drop subtle hints throughout the time they knew each other? "Are you watching a movie?" he asked, hoping that this would be it; that the two were simply sharing the same kind of interests.
If one looked closely there was a hint of nervousness in the redhead, and he averted his gaze down for a moment. "We're going to grab a beer and talk about stuff." He answered, trying to appear as casual as humanly possible. He raised his gaze again, looking at Kaoru and smiling. "He's a nice guy. Fits the group well, don't you think?"
"Of course he does," Kaoru answered honestly and only if one knew him well one could hear the slight sarcasm that was laced in his tone. "We all chose him, right? And he's a talented bassist." How did it happen now that they were talking about Toshiya? Kaoru would have preferred to talk about something else as he didn't like the, for him obvious, affection in the redhead's voice when he mentioned the bassist. "So are you two having plans for the weekend?" he asked tentatively and still hoped the answer would be negative.
"Yeah." To his disappointment Die nodded instantly, not bothering to try to conceal anything. It was how the redhead always was, answered the questions straight out honestly, and even if he did try to lie everyone noticed it. "We'll go out on Friday. I suppose it'll take pretty long..."
"I see." Kaoru nodded on his side, trying hard to conceal the disappointment that was clearly laced in both, his voice and his expression. "How about grabbing a beer together on Saturday?" he asked then, hoping Die would be free that day. "We could go to the arcade together or watch a video."
"How about the new ninja-movie!?" Instantly Die turned on his seat to look at the other guitarist straight, his eyes sparkling enthusiastically and he was smiling brightly. "They released it on DVD last week and I've been just WAITING for a decent excuse to buy it!"
"That sounds like a plan!" At a moment's notice, Kaoru's features brightened and his eyes were sparkling. "So Saturday? My place or yours?" He was enthusiastic, couldn't believe his luck and was dearly hoping that that day, they could leave the topic 'Toshiya' aside for the time being.
"How about mine? I don't know how long it'll take on Friday, but you can always come after noon to ring my doorbell and we can eat some breakfast together too." Die suggested, smiling and clearly pleased about their plans already.
The older guitarist smiled equally wide and nodded a couple of times to confirm his agreement. He had to direct his gaze at the street again, but looked into the rear view mirror to catch a glimpse at the redhead next to him. "Sounds just good. I bring breakfast and beer for later. You organize the rest." He couldn't believe his luck and was honestly looking forward to Saturday already.
"Sure thing. We could order pizza later then. I have a new game too, on Nintendo, so we could test it as well." The redhead nodded several times, looking like he was about to bounce a bit on his seat even. He had always been easily enthusiastic about things, but now it was impossible to miss that he was particularly happy.
When he looked like that, his eyes sparkling like black diamonds and the huge smile plastered to his lips, Kaoru would have loved to just grab him and give him a deep, long kiss. He had always wanted to know what Die tasted like. At least he knew that the redhead smelled like strawberries as that was the scent of his favourite shampoo; something that fitted him all too good and would've made the older guitarist drool if he hadn't had so much self-control. "Then I better bring a bit more beer," he remarked chuckling and winked at his companion through the mirror.
"That's right. I knew you'd understand." Die laughed, shaking his head a bit. He turned his whole upper body to face Kaoru, opening his mouth to say something but then just turned back again, a small blush appearing on his cheeks. "It'll be fun." He was still smiling though as he spoke up. "It's been a while since we spent time together..."
"Yeah." Kaoru nodded, pretending not to have noticed Die's attempt to say something else. Whatever it might have been, the older guitarist would pay money to know it. Still, he didn't want the mood to become awkward and just kept up the smile on his lips. "We've had a lotta work lately and then practicing with Toshiya and such." The stopped the car in front of Die's apartment, but switched off the engine to show that he didn't want to hurry.
After a short moment of silence, he turned around to face the man next to him. "I already thought you don't want to spend time with your grumpy slave-driving bandleader anymore." The remark was clearly a joke and yet there was something in Kaoru's eyes that showed he was waiting for Die to deny that.
The younger man smiled softly, tilting his head a bit as he looked the other deep in the eye, his gaze honest. "You know that's not true. I'm always up for spending time with you." He chuckled a bit, winking. "Especially since I beat you in playing Nintendo." He dodged the hit that Kaoru aimed at him, laughing and pulling further from him.
"But seriously," The laughter was gone, the redhead turning more serious. "You've been awfully grumpy lately... something wrong?"
"No no." Kaoru hurriedly denied, shaking his head and his hand. "It's probably just the stress." How could he have told Die that he was jealous since the redhead spent so much time with their new bassist? He could even understand it. Toshiya was gorgeous, easy going and truly charming. Why shouldn't Die fall for him instead of the smaller lead-guitarist who didn't have the perfect skin nor a long neck like the other man? He forced himself to smile. "I know, this is only the beginning and it'll get much more stressful once the album's out, but I can't help it. Sorry. I didn’t mean to be insufferable."
"I'm just worried. The others are too, I know they are." Die's smile was tentative, and he obviously didn't want to push the topic too much and let the other man still have a way out without forcing him into anything. "You have to let us help if it's too much work for you alone."
The words caused a warm feeling to well up inside the older guitarist and the gaze of his eyes turned soft. "Thank you." He put his hand on the other man's thigh although the touch alone caused his heartbeat to speed up. "But it's really okay. It's home-made stress and it'll get better with time." After another moment, he nodded at the door. "You should go to bed and sleep too. You'll have a stressful weekend," he winked smirking. If it would only be half as stressful as Kaoru would have wanted it to be, he'd be more than only smirking now.
Die chuckled, placing his hand on the other's that was still resting on his leg, squeezing a bit. "Sure thing. And don't you dare appear here before noon on Saturday! I intend on sleeping long, after all I don't know when I get to sleep in the evening." He grinned brightly, but almost before Kaoru even noticed the younger man was already out of the car, bending down to catch a glimpse at Kaoru before closing the door. "See ya then!"
The older man remained staring after him until Die had turned the corner and was out of his sight. He could still feel the redhead's touch on his hand, his words echoing in his ears. If only Kaoru weren't so inhibited when it came to the other man. He was quite sure that Die preferred male company when it came to the bed, but that didn't necessarily mean he would have to think about Kaoru as a possible mate.
Two weeks before Toshiya had joined their band, Kaoru had been almost sure that Die would appreciate it if he hit on him. After all, the tall guitarist hadn't talked about having an affair in longer then and he also hadn't introduced anybody. But with the new bassist, everything seemed to have turned upside down and now Kaoru wasn't sure if that had been only his imagination even.
The next days passed by fast in Kaoru's opinion, and he had even gotten into a slightly better mood as he was thinking about meeting his friend during the weekend and spending a whole day with him at that. He was truly looking forward to that, and the only thing that managed to darken his mood was the fact that Die was going out with Toshiya on Friday evening, and had even said it would take long. Somehow that resulted in Kaoru's mind providing vivid images of what exactly the two could do to keep them up all night.
And when he accidentally found out that Toshiya was busy on Saturday because his mom visited him, Kaoru asked himself if he was only a substitute for Die because the bassist didn't have time for him. Although that thought somehow clouded his anticipation a bit, he tried to push it aside and told himself that Die really only wanted to hang out with him and pushed the unwanted feelings aside.
On Saturday morning, or more like afternoon as it was already one, Kaoru was finally standing on Die's doorstep, ringing the bell so that the other man would let him in. After the door into Die's apartment opened he spotted the really tired looking redhead, who was rubbing his eyes and trying to wake up properly. "Don't tell me you were still sleeping?" Kaoru couldn't help himself, and only got a small grin as an answer.
"I was." Die yawned widely. "But it's alright. I'll be awake in a moment." His hair was sticking into every possible direction and he wasn't actually wearing much anything else than the sheet he had grabbed from his bed when getting up.
The older guitarist nodded and followed his friend inside. His gaze was glued to Die's back though where the sheet clearly gave away the form of his body underneath. Did Die torture him on purpose? Probably not. Why should he? He had no idea that Kaoru had fallen hard for him, right? "Just take your time and take a shower or whatever," he suggested and turned the corner to get into the small kitchen where he placed his shoppings on the table. A good, strong wooden table which surely would survive some one on one action. Again there were these images of Die and Toshiya in his mind and Kaoru shook his head quickly to get rid of them. Smiling, he turned around to face his friend. "I will prepare breakfast meanwhile. Okay?"
"Sure. Thanks!" Die smiled brightly, yawning again as he seemed to be still half asleep. "Maybe it'll wake me up..." He seemed to remember something then, his expression brightening. "Oh, and I had the time to buy the DVD yesterday so we can watch it later on then, right?" He was smiling sweetly again, looking at Kaoru expectantly.
"Of course." The older guitarist couldn't help but to answer that smile and nodded emphasizing. "Wasn't that one of the reasons why I came?" he asked winking. "And now go. I am starving. Am already awake since eight." He gestured towards the door to make Die get going.
"Eight!?" The redhead looked stunned. "That's inhuman!" He was turning around though and it didn't take long before he had vanished already and headed off to take that shower finally.
Like promised, Kaoru prepared the breakfast and set everything on the small coffee-table in the living-room. He hadn't lied, was hungry and tired since he had been up so early. Of course he couldn't give away that his inner restlessness and the anticipation to meet Die Saturday morning had been the reason for his early wake-up. Sitting on the couch, he waited for Die to return from the shower, but as it took longer than expected, he grew tired and finally his eyes fell shut.
He woke up again when he felt the couch shift a bit as weight landed beside him, and as he startled and opened his eyes he saw the redhead sitting beside him, smiling at him. They destroyed the breakfast in no time, both hungry as hell and afterwards moved smoothly to playing Nintendo.
As predicted, Die won mostly and at one point the older man was starting to protest loudly, saying he didn't want to play anymore. Laughing, Die forced him to play one more round, but then they agreed they could move on to ordering pizza and watching some movies as well.
Even when they were already eating the pizza, Kaoru mentioned that Die had been cheating while playing the game. "You just gave me a broken controller," he stated, but couldn't hide his grin completely. He liked to play computer games, but was better at racing games and not these fight-games.
"Don't even try," Die shook his head, chuckling as he raised his eyes from his food to the other man. "You're just too sucky. And no match for me! Admit it!" He knew that in a racing game he would've gotten his butt kicked seriously, but he didn't let that disturb him.
"Yeah right. And next thing you tell me will be that you'd win gran tourismo too." Kaoru smirked, knowing his friend's thoughts quite well. Days like these were perfect in his eyes. No work, good food, nice company and a good movie which was still lying on the table, waiting for the right moment to be shown. But hadn’t he forgotten something? Oh, beer. Instantly, he jumped at his feet and returned from the kitchen with two cans of beer, handing one to his friend.
It was accepted with a thankful nod, and instantly Die took a huge gulp, before turning back to his friend again. "No, I wouldn't tell you that. But it'd be true nevertheless." He winked, a grin instantly finding its way to his lips.
"Next time we go to the arcade and I beat the shit outta you," the older man promised laughing. He had totally forgotten about Toshiya and the troubles with the bassist and just sat down close to the redhead on the floor. "How about the movie?" Kaoru asked when he had shoved the last bite of pizza into his mouth.
"Sure," Die nodded instantly, his mouth still full of food so the word came out funnily and he didn't try to speak anything else. He crawled towards the DVD-player, grabbing the movie along and inserting the disc instantly. As he crawled back to his original place with the remote he was grinning happily. "It'll be so cool!"
"I saw the trailer and wanted to watch it at the movies already," Kaoru gave away smiling. "But then, there was no time. I didn't even know that it's already been released on DVD." Turning around a bit, he grabbed a cushion from the small couch and got comfortable on the floor. As the coffee-table disturbed his view, he used his foot to push it aside a bit. The redhead settled on the couch, as he was now able to occupy it all alone and get comfortable as he wished. And the movie didn't disappoint them, as they both were equally fascinated by it already from the first moment on.
It was a funny ninja-action movie and in between, both men had to laugh heartily. Every now and then, Kaoru turned his head to take a look at his friend, nodding at him to confirm that he enjoyed that moment as much as the other one. Somewhere in between, Die got up to get them another beer, but halted the movie not to miss anything. Afterwards, he plopped down beside Kaoru though and not on the couch.
They were still laughing, the movie turning out more and more enjoyable every moment. At one point Die was practically leaning on his friend's shoulder naturally, neither of them acknowledging the fact in any way at all. It wasn't out of the usual for them to be physical as it was in Die's nature to touch somebody or, like now, lean against him. At first, Kaoru had always stiffened, had asked himself why the other man did that, but now he had gotten used to it and didn't see anything unusual in it.
Even when the movie ended they stayed close like that, only switching on the TV to see if there was anything good to watch. After all, there was nothing for them to do the whole day but to be lazy and enjoy relaxing. Inwardly, Kaoru was fighting with himself. Should he use the relaxed moment to try something? He would really have wanted to just drop all his fears and simply tell his friend and fellow guitarist that he wanted more than just friendship. Still, he didn't dare, probably wasn't drunk enough and was too insecure because of the quite obvious closeness between Die and Toshiya.
He was on the verge though, and had almost collected enough courage to say something when suddenly the redhead's phone started ringing. They both flinched a bit, and quickly the younger man got up to answer the call, which turned out to be short, only a couple of minutes. As he came back he sat on the couch though, the relaxed moment of closeness somewhat ruined. "Mom. Wanted to know why I didn't visit them in such a long time." He smiled apologetically.
Although the other guitarist cursed the disturbance inwardly, he still smiled as he knew how mothers could be. "Well, I hope you told her that you're at the verge of becoming a super mega rockstar and that that leaves you practically no time to visit them," he said winking. Only five seconds longer, just five damn seconds and he would have at least said Die that he thought he was gorgeous. But now the moment was totally gone and it wouldn't suit anymore.
The answer was a stunning smile along with a few chuckles. "Yeah, something along those lines, yes. And mom thinks that I'm at the verge of becoming a sad alcoholic bum when things don't work out after all." He winked, joking to lighten up the mood again. But the comfortableness had faded, or changed somehow, and they were back on the strictly friendly basis.
Still, they both enjoyed the rest of the evening, downed a couple of more beers together, toasting to Die's mother, and only parted when it was already dawning outside. The older guitarist had left his car at home, of course, and walked the short distance to his own apartment. His thoughts though were at the redheaded guitarist and how he made him feel.
That night, Kaoru had come to the conclusion that he really wanted Die, wanted to fight for him with Toshiya. But then, he had no idea if there really was anything between the bassist and the redhead, so he would have to wait for proof. After all, Toshiya was his friend as well and he didn't have anything against him in the slightest, as long as he kept his long fingers away from Die.
After the weekend there weren’t really any opportunities to meet again or arrange any kind of activities as they were all more or less occupied by work. And that instantly caused the lead guitarist's mood to darken even more. He was simply the one to stay behind to do more work mostly, and although normally he didn't mind seeing Die leave together with Toshiya now it made him more or less annoyed. He still didn't know whether there was anything between the two or not, but he didn't mind as he was determined to fight for the redhead's attention nevertheless.
A perfect opportunity seemed to present itself as on Friday afternoon Shinya suggested that they would all go and hit some bars together, as it had been long since the last time. Kaoru was the first to volunteer when the drummer asked who was interested. Of course he was. Die wouldn't leave out such an opportunity, that was for sure and in the dim light of a club, along with a couple of drinks to give you courage, it would be easier to talk to him.
When they were there, Kaoru had to find out though that Die and Toshiya were clinging together; at least he was certain they were. The only ray of light on the horizon was that Kyo's mood seemed to have dropped below zero as well. Something seemed to be utterly wrong with the vocalist and maybe he'd make a good drinking-companion that night. But when Shinya asked who wanted to dance, Kaoru simply had to get up as well. He was still hoping to get a peaceful moment with the redhead.
He was sure that he didn't like the way Die and Toshiya were heading to the dance floor together, laughing at something and that made him turn back and decide he needed something to drink. He didn't know whether he was drowning his moodiness into alcohol or trying to gain courage with it, but he still downed a drink after another, not even noticing Kyo as he passed him by. One thing he did notice though, and it was that at one point Toshiya was coming back from the dance floor, obviously having left Die behind as he wasn't following him.
For a moment, Kaoru just stared at the bassist and then towards the stairs, somehow waiting for Die to follow after any second. Maybe the redhead had just gone to the toilet and told Toshiya to go ahead? But when nothing happened after a few more minutes, Kaoru quickly downed the rest of his drink and headed towards the stairs that led to the first floor. He was swaying a bit already, obviously drunk, but he was still clear enough to be determined to get what he wanted.
It only took a few moments and he had spotted the redhead who seemed to come his way, obviously wanting to follow Toshiya. That didn't happen though. Before Die had reached the stairs, Kaoru stepped into his way, giving him a long, seductive look. The next second, he had grabbed the other man's neck and pulled him down into a kiss; a real kiss and not one of these tentative, uncertain pecks.
A long moment passed without Die reacting in any way, as he simply was too stunned to even realize what was happening. This certainly couldn't be true! It was a dream, a fantasy of some sort... but it felt real though. When the younger guitarist finally got over the initial shock he simply grabbed the other man's head, making him tilt it so that they could deepen the kiss further. They were almost eating each other alive, trying to get the most of the contact and refusing to part although they desperately needed to breathe.
*
"Okay." Kyo smiled widely after the last kiss and couldn't deny himself from pecking Toshiya's lips again a couple of times. "Now I am curious. Tell me what for Die needs your help." At that moment, he spotted a whiff of pink in the corner of his eyes and saw their bandleader rush upstairs, not even sparing them a glance. "Damn, Kaoru's quite drunk," he uttered under his breath.
"Hopefully that'll make things easier." Toshiya laughed, turning his head only to see the lead guitarist vanish into the upper floor. Then he turned back to the smaller man beside him. "As I told you, Die has this major crush on Kaoru. But you know him, he would never dare to say anything." Toshiya begun, explaining honestly.
"He thought I'm easygoing enough to be able to handle anything like that, and he wanted me to teach him all the tricks. So I've been trying to psyche him up to be able to talk to Kaoru about it, and I've been trying to come up with things Die can say when the situation comes. Stuff like that. Mostly supporting his self-image though..."
"You're his date-doctor?" Kyo asked and then burst out laughing. "And there I was jealous. I wish them all the luck in the world."
*
At one point, the kiss had to break, but as Die hadn't resisted at all, quite the contrary, Kaoru didn't want to give him the chance to ask stupid questions now and break the mood. For once in his life he didn't care about the people that were surrounding them, staring at the two men covertly or openly, depending on their nature.
Smirking at the redhead, Kaoru grabbed his belt and pulled him closer, initiating the next kiss. That was what he had been dreaming about from the moment he had been introduced to Die and now he wouldn't let him off the hook easily again. Slowly, he allowed his hands to move around the taller man, straight to his butt.
As Die was being pulled closer he went practically boneless, melting into the kiss and simply trying to get as close as possible as he had been yearning for this for so long already. Their bodies seemed to fit together just perfectly, and one after another they initiated deep kisses, getting lost in the heat between them.
