fockewolf-his lost reflection: This was my attempt to try and capture the feel of one of the odd songs from ACW. If you have a song that is 80bpm and play half the tracks in double time they will sound like 160bpm, think of taking a few of the faster ones and playing them 1/4 of the speed then one of the 80 bpm one and play it 1/2 as fast. If this is done well you end up with a complex song that doesn't give up it secrets easly, one you can listen to years later and will still sound fresh. Done poorly if sounds really disjointed and will confuse the listener, they will just give up. As happened in the ACW songs, I took stock and tried to learn from my mistakes.
This song is between 160 and 170 bpm, the bass line is straight eighth notes. It has a driving feel to it and was produced by the Novation bass station. The main synth line is from a Yamaha TG-33, its a very dark ambient sound. In the verse the line is played in pairs played quickly with the fourth one held out, to give space to the bass line, in the chours they whole notes held out. A bell is also used as an accent. A drum loop I made using some samples I had provides the main backing, it goes under the whole song and is half time to the bpm. Accenting this are drums from the Alesis DM5, probally one of the better drum machines they made. In the verse the snare is playing the whole time and the kick in the first half of the measure, think stigmata by ministry. They are accenting the beat. On top of this I have another snare playing a really fast jungle line, I had recently gone over to computer for sequencing and was having fun laying down a line a chopping it up and cutting and pasting it else where. In the chours the kicks come in play the whole time. There is some more distorted percussion that comes and goes through out the song.
The title of the song is inspired by the book The Keep, that was turned into the movie by the same name. The two immortal charters break the rules and are punished by losing thier reflections. Neat concept can be used for a metaphor for mant things, and that what Sev did with the lyrics. Her vocals sound good, this was one of the first songs that I wrote with knowing she was going to sing on them.
Wade and Marcus from Christ Analogue handled the production and it sounds great, they really knew what they were doing.
It took me a few listens to really get this track. I know its a bit different with the contrasting elements but still works. The only thing i would change would be to drop some of the extra noises out and reinforce the synth.
Severina redid this track with her new project Cylab, they did it more straight forward and it still works.
