Prompt: bedtime story

The clock on the wall says it's 3:15 in the morning when he wakes up to find a pair of green eyes peering at him. Blinking away the sleep, Remus looks around briefly as he comes to realize that he and Sirius had ended up falling asleep on the couch a couple of hours earlier. Which doesn't exactly surprise him, considering how much they had been walking around the day before.

"Hello Uncle Remus," the three-and-a-half eyear old says with a grin once he sees that he's awake. "Are we getting ready so we can go soon?"

Remus lets out a soft chuckle as he ruffles the already messy black hair. "Not quite yet, Harry. It's still very early." He clears his throat a little to get rid of how groggy his voice sounds, checking the clock again. "...did you have a nightmare?" Merlin it really is still very early.

"No, I wanted a glass of water." Harry pauses before climbing up on the couch to sit next to Remus. "Are you sure it's too early still?"

With a nod towards Sirius, who is watching them with a half-asleep look and a groggy smile on his face, Remus smiles. "See? He's not really awake just yet, either. Sunrise won't be here for at least a few more hours. How about I get you that glass of water, and you can go back to sleep so you can be well rested for whatever the day will bring us?"

A deep sigh is the answer at first, followed by a nod, and Remus' smile grows slightly. After that glass of water, and reassuring Sirius that he could get Harry settled so he could go back to sleep, they make their way to Harry's room.

"Uncle Remus," Harry says suddenly as he allows him to tuck him in. "What if you and Dad read me so many stories that one day you'll run out?"

"Ah, that won't happen, Harry." Remus sits on the edge of the bed, leaning against the backboard. "I can assure you of that."

"How do you know?"

"Well... In case we ever do run out of stories that are in books, we can simply make them up ourselves for you. And we would create as many as you would like us to."

"And you two would think of loads, yeah?" Harry grins, green eyes lighting up. "You and Dad can make up stories better than the ones in the books."

Remus chuckles softly. "Thank you. We love to tell them to you." Kissing the top of his head, he shows him the book of fables they had been reading the previous night and that had still been next to his bed. "Shall I continue these for now, however? We have a few ore to go before the book is over."

"Yes, please! But tomorrow could you and Dad make up a story for me?"

"Yes, of course. I promise." The smile grows into a grin, especially as Harry leans against his chest so he can also look at the pictures from the book, and Remus starts to read. It doesn't take long for Harry to fall asleep and, without noticing, in no time Remus himself falls back asleep while leaning against the backboard of the bed still. It isn't until a hand gently shakes his shoulder that he wakes up once more.

"I thought the plan was to get Harry to sleep, Moony," Sirius murmurs quietly, still smiling from the sight.

"Ah, right. That is just how effective my stories are, I suppose." Returning the smile, Remus turns to look at Harry and gently lays him down comfortably on the bed. While he stands and stretches, Sirius tucks Harry back in and once they make sure that he is sleeping soundly they quietly make their way out of the room. "Oh, by the way, Padfoot... Tomorrow we are in charge of coming up with a bedtime story."

"Are we? Well good, there are some stories we have yet to share." A beat, and suddenly there's a smirk on his face. "We could tell him that one about that Summer holiday, before we graduated and--"

"Oh no, not that one."

"But he'd love to hear it."

"And I'm sure you would love to share it," Remus responds, managing to keep a straight face, "but no. Otherwise I can tell him what also happened in that same holiday."

Sirius laughs then. "I doubt you would actually tell him, but all right, we can think of another one." Catching the happy smile on his best friend's face, his own suddenly grows. He already knows the answer, but he asks anyway, "Happy to be here?"

Leaning towards him, he 'steals' a kiss. "Always."
