This was posted at
his IJ journal for the birthday boy but I'm cross-posting now.
Prompt:
holding hands.
It's ten minutes until midnight when Remus peeks his head into Sirius' apartment to ask if he'd mind going out for a walk because he can't sleep. It is, of course, a way to get Sirius away from the castle just minutes before his birthday but Remus doesn't carry anything with him other than his wand and cloak. The birthday present that has been resting on his desk for most of the day (charmed to keep curious eyes away) is still there, waiting until the 21st of March arrives.
Once they make their way out of the castle, as they walk next to each other Remus casually slips his hand into Sirius while making conversation. It's so easy to fall into step like this with him. It's just as natural as breathing sometimes, the way they fit together. The way Remus is able to simply reach over and take his hand, the way they are able to talk and simply fall into step at the same time. The moon is hanging above them as they walk hand in hand, its light making it easy for them to find their way around the grounds, but that is really among the last few things Remus is thinking about.
What he is thinking about comes exactly at midnight. He doesn't bother to hide the fact that he summons the present to them, because Sirius had probably suspected it and once it's finally there he removes the charms and hands it to him with a smile on his face. It's cold out, but Remus urges him to open the present now rather than waiting until they are back inside.
Inside the box there is a piece of parchment, along with something wrapped with Gryffindor red tissue paper.
Sirius,
I don't think I can ever thank you enough for how happy you make me. For just...everything that you do. For being here, for...everything. Your friendship, your trust, your love, it all means so much more to me than I can ever, ever say because words never seem like enough.
When you and Harry were traveling, I made a promise. One that I never really voiced over, but I did make it and I have always tried to keep it. That promise is to make you and Harry as happy as I can, because of how much you two mean to me. Our family is more than I could've asked for, and I feel so very fortunate to have you both in my life. Those years, when you two were away weren't easy, for any of us, but all families go through their rough spots, yes? And we may have gone through ours, and we went through many months of being apart, but distance... Well, distance isn't that big of an obstacle, I don't think. We care about each other far too much to let it get in the way, and I believe we proved that.
I will continue to fulfill that promise for as long as I live. Now there is no more distances, and there are challenges that may seem more difficult, but I believe we are strong enough to face them. We will make this year great, and the next one even better. I promise.
I love you, with all my heart. I hope you have the happiest of birthdays.
Always,
Remus
Under the tissue paper there is
a small gift that Remus had gotten at a Muggle store, because he had done his research and it had been the only thing that could've worked for the gift.
Not a lot of people know that Remus occasionally plays the piano because he's not open about it at all. In fact, the only ones who know are Sirius and Harry, but he had never really played much. For Sirius' birthday, however, he had practiced enough to play
Open Arms. He didn't think it was a good enough version, comparing it to the original, but well. That would be impossible, really. The point, though, is that he had done what he had never done before and had recorded himself so he could 'give' the song to Sirius. It is for that reason that the song, along with the original, are the two tracks already uploaded and ready to be listened to. It even says so on a small note that had been attached with the iPod.
When Sirius turns to him, Remus reaches to briefly give his hand a small squeeze before leaning in for a kiss. The birthday boy needs one, after all.
