One would expect an actuarial program that’s designed to calculate insurance premiums and the like to have a bland or boring personality. That’s not the case with Ram. Instead, he has a youthful, charismatic and humorous outward demeanor, even if he can be quite brash and sarcastic at times too. More than anything, Ram has a sincere desire to be of assistance to others and takes pride in that. In the film, he mentions that he liked what was he programmed to be because he enjoyed helping others to get ready for the worst and taking care of their future needs. Friendly and talkative, Ram was the first one to explain to Crom and Flynn where they were and what the games were about, even though there was a high possibility that he was helping a potential opponent.
Ram can be the warmest, kindest, and most sympathetic of partners; affectionate, demonstrative, and spontaneous. He genuinely likes people. He’s quite the sensible program too, and was the one to notice that Flynn was different, that he was special. Ram believes truly and unconditionally in the users and wants to continue serving them, a belief that didn’t weaken despite being turned into a gladiator and forced to play the deadly games on the Grid. He knows and appreciates people and is apt to neglect himself and his own needs for the needs of others. As an example, when he was dying he asked Flynn to help Tron finish his mission and take down the MCP rather than ask him to save him. He's a global learner, he can see the big picture and juggle an amazing number of responsibilities or projects simultaneously. As an actuarial program, Ram has tremendous entrepreneurial ability.
He has unabashed and unconditional affection for Flynn and for Tron, a clear concept of friendship and no patience for cruelty. He’s not as strong or powerful as Tron, but what he lacks in strength he has in spirit and wits, and that’s why he survived for so long in the games. He can be intellectual, serious, all business if the situation requires him to do so, but when he gets the chance, he changes his attitude and becomes much more playful. A good example of that happens in the scene where Flynn, Tron and Ram escape from the Light Cycle game grid and find refuge in a cave that contains a source of pure energy. Ram goes from 'looks like we just escaped death' to 'that refreshment is exactly what we need now' in the span of seconds.
Flynn was the only user he ever interacted with face to face, and Ram didn’t know that he was one until shortly before his death, but he reacted with slight confusion every time Flynn said something unusual. If he interacts with other non-program creatures they will most likely cause the same sort of reaction in him: confusion and curiosity.
The producers also said that all of the programs are a reflection of their user's personality. For example, Cindy Morgan was told that Yori retains some vague memory of her user (Lora) having a romance with Flynn at one time and that’s why she gets closer to him. In Ram’s case, his user is
Roy Kleinberg (aka ZackAttack) the man that dedicated most of his life to Flynn’s cause, has a sweet nature and is described as "ENCOM's moral compass".
Character Abilities:
Ram, despite being an actuarial program with no security features, is pretty good at the gladiatorial games he was forced into and managed to survive for a long time. He learned to fight with his Identity disc for long range combat, and knows how to drive Light Cycles of the first generation (that look like a simple baton while not active).
While not physically imposing, he has some formidable physical and practical skills that Flynn pointed out when he saw him practice with his disc. Ram’s disc (as it’s seen in the first Tron movie, unlike those in Legacy) is pretty good at deflecting attacks. Programs don’t age, he will look exactly the same as the day he was created no matter how old he gets.
He has a cooperative personality and is good at teamwork, but more than anything he’s good at adapting to new situations (hence, the reason he survived the games). Being willing to accept others and his friendly and loyal attitude makes him a partner that can be trusted easily and that won’t run away or abandon his friends at the first sign of danger. More like the opposite. If he analyses a situation and finds it extremely risky, Ram would suggest a strategic retreat, but he would never let his partner behind if the latter decides to stay and fight.
Ram’s cheerful and optimistic attitude (a canon example is how he was the only one smirking during the light cycle race) helps to keep people spirits up during hard times. He’s also very approachable and on the optimistic side about everything and everyone. He’s never afraid of trying different things or to give others a hand.
He’s a quick thinker that doesn’t give up easily; he is able to come up with strategies that take the minimal risk and accomplish the maximum benefit. More often than not said strategies will focus on keeping his friends alive and safe, and getting the job done quickly and efficiently. He’s also very good at numbers, arithmetic and logic, mathematical variables and any digital representation of text and data: binary code, ISO, Javanese language…If it’s related to a computer, he’s good at it. Like his original user Roy, Ram’s probably good at hacking as well.
He also has actuarial insurance mad skills. That’s not very useful in combat but if you need a pension plan, he's your man.
Character Weaknesses:
Ram main weaknesses are physical ones. He’s on the small side and not as physically imposing or strong as other programs like Tron or Clu. That’s mostly because he wasn’t designed to be a fighting program but a financial one, and his primary function was to evaluate risks and find solutions for possible needs.
First and foremost, Ram will have a really hard time accepting his new condition, not as a weapon but as human. Users/humans are god-like entities for those programs who have faith in them, they are their creators. Ram sees himself as a creation, he thinks and acts as a program, and will avoid calling himself an user/human. He thinks that he doesn’t belong to the same category as them, that’s he’s not worthy of being called that or considered a god. That’s one of the issues he will have to sort out with his possible partner so that they are capable to interact like equals and resonante properly.
Ram is a program and as such he never had the same necessities as humans do. While in canon programs are shown resting, drinking and even falling in love, they fail to be able to relate to the most basic concepts such as aging, eating or even what the sun is and how it looks like. That makes him very naive in some aspects of life and he can get confused easily.
Ram is good at confrontations and fights against a third party, however fights between close friends upset him and he isn’t sure how to react to them. One of the worst things that anybody can do to him is making him pick between two friends.
[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What are the abilities that your character will retain in Soul Campaign?
- He will keep his reflexes/’quick on his feet’-agility.
- Battle intelligence and fast ability to evaluate risks.
- Logical and mathematical skills, as well as those related to programming.
What are the weaknesses that your character will lose or gain in Soul Campaign?
Weaknesses Lost: Not many, he’s still a small guy that can be overpowered, and confrontations between friends still make him uncomfortable. However, now that he will have a human body he won't die automatically from derezzing (blow up into very little pieces) if he gets hurt in battle. Instead he will bleed, get cuts or bruises, but this will be a much better alternative than dying.
Weaknesses Gained: A lot of them are related to his new environment. Ram never had to deal with bad weather, dust, sand and other sort of substances that can mess with his circuits. As I mentioned before, he knows little about the real world and basic concepts like eating and sleeping regularly are foreign to him. He’s most likely going to mess up at some point.
Basic human biology, he knows nothing about it. There are similarities between programs and humans, but the differences are even bigger. Ram doesn’t even know how humans reproduce and never saw a child before. He will be curious about why certain humans are so small. The same applies to animals.
Hugs and friendly demonstrations of affection are something he is used to, but intimate gestures such as kissing or flirting will either fly right over his head or confuse him completely. Programs can feel pain and pleasure, but Ram never had to deal with the roller-coaster of feelings and emotions that come with a human body due to hormones. He will get more than a little disconcerted and freaked out, even if he’s not prone to panic.
When it comes to basic needs, Ram at first won’t realize that he has new ones that are nothing like the ones he had as a program. As far as the Game-specific setting goes, the first days in the city Ram will only drink water (In his universe water is a font of energy and the only thing they needed to survive) and ignore food completely. If no one explains to him that the reason he’s feeling so tired and his stomach hurts it’s because he needs food on his system he will end passing out. At the same time, and because he never had food before, if later he keeps eating or drinking too much he will end intoxicated. Oh, god, no one give him alcohol, please. The same applies to the fact that he will have to shave, cut his hair, take baths, he will be able to get ill, bleed and have dreams and nightmares.
Also, because Ram idolize users/humans, he will look out more for his partner’s needs and security than his own and others can take advantage of that. As example, one of his stronger attacks as a weapon is all about making sure his partner is safe and healed, while it can cause him pain and drain his energy.
[ WEAPON ONLY SECTION ]
What is your character's Weapon form?:
His weapon form is his
identity disc. It looks like a white solid disc with blue rings in the middle. As it’s shown in the movie, the disc can be user either to deflect attacks or be thrown to hit an opponent. It works both, as a short bladed weapon and also as a buckler shield.
When the disc is energized it has a lethal cutting edge that can derezz an opponent instantly with a direct hit. While it can and may ricochet off unyielding surfaces, it will return directly to its owner and not harm its owner when caught, no matter if the cutting edge is activated.
His attacks are listed below:
-(Any resonance): Slash Disk-The attack will leave cuts and general physical damage. Basically, the disk will cut anything that cross it’s path, like a
chakram.
-(Mild resonance) Charged beam- It hits the enemy once or several quickly repeated strikes that release electric discharges of varying intensity. The electrical shock would momentarily stun the limb/opponent or cause pain. It only requires minimal resonance to use and takes small amounts of energy at a time. The higher the resonance, stronger the electric discharge.
-(Perfect resonance) Enhanced Regeneration- This healing move requires decent to higher levels of resonance, and uses Ram's own energy to heal his meister during battle. The major wounds can only be partially healed while scratches, minor wounds and bruises are healed completely. Because it uses Ram's energy the healing takes a fair amount of control and might cause Ram physical pain. He restricts the energy transferred for that reason.
-(Perfect resonance) Mirror discs- This attack move also requires higher levels of resonation. The main characteristic of this attack is speed and the element of surprise. When used, Ram creates a dozen of images of his weapon form, giving the opponent the sensation that it's going to be hit by multiple discs. Only one of the discs is Ram, and therefore has mass, the rest are just projections. However, all of them look exactly the same and the opponent needs to figure out which one is the real weapon to avoid getting hit by surprise.
