Proverbs 20:1
In the NIV (New International Version) it is, "Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise." But in the KJV (King James) it is, "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise."
I'm wondering how they got the milder "beer" term from "strong drink". And since it follows "wine", it seems to imply stronger than wine for that "strong drink". How do you get to "beer" then, and not whiskey and others? Sure, I agree that beer's effect very often promotes "brawling" - so I've heard. But why not translate to "Wine is a mocker and liquor a brawler"?
