Finding Summer

There was hot, or cold. Sometimes it was raining or snowing. But there were no seasons.

At least, until today.

The man knelt on the concrete, hands cupping the tiny miracle that had pushed through a crack. He rolled the tender growth gently between his fingers, staining them faintly green. He brought them up to his face...

...and breathed summer. Parks. Picnics. Memories.

A hand came down on his shoulder, not unkindly.

"Time's up."

Neal stood and followed the guards, but his gaze lingered on the single blade of grass until the heavy doors closed behind him.

He'd be back.

Special Recipe

It's an important life lesson: never accept brownies from anyone under 30.

But...June's granddaughter was the kind of woman you accepted anything from. If she offered you brownies, you took one. If she offered you a big plate of rats, you took one.

The brownies had been very special. Cindy was an art student.

Peter had been both exasperated and a little smug when he ordered Neal to stay behind.

Neal nervously eased his collar. The van felt hot. "I feel like it's noticeable. Is it noticeable?"

Jones patted him on the shoulder, grinning.

"For the eleventh time, no."
