The dining table at the Burkes' house was littered with the remains of one of El's sumptuous meals. Peter was about ready for a nap, but he strove to pay attention as his wife recounted the vagaries of her latest problem client.
"...so, now the bride and her father aren't speaking to each other, because she wants to spend $30,000 on chocolates..."
Peter blinked, his attention abruptly caught. "How do you spend $30,000 on chocolate?"
"Well, they're $250 apiece-the most expensive chocolates in the world." Elizabeth sighed. There were times she wished she'd chosen any other line of work. "Even if she gets her way, I have no idea how I'm going to source ten dozen. They're made one at a time, strictly to order."
Peter waved these concerns away, returning to what he thought of as the major point. "$250 apiece?" he said in a scandalized tone of voice. "Are they filled with diamonds, or what?"
On the other side of the table, Neal straightened up, his lips moving in silent calculation. Then he grinned. "No, diamond-filled chocolates are worth a lot more."
Peter stared at him.
"The statute of limitation's run out, so...funny story..."
