Peter jerked awake, his heart hammering. Something cold and wet, like a piece of defrosting meat, was pressed against his bare arm.
Given a choice, Peter Burke was a creature of habit. There was one routine, though, that he could learn to live without. He rolled over resignedly. Satchmo stood by the bed, wagging his tail madly. Dogs are oblivious to late-night stakeouts.
Groaning quietly, Peter dragged himself out of bed, grabbing running clothes from the chair.
It was 5:30 a.m.
Ever since Satchmo got big enough to reach over the bed, he hadn't needed an alarm clock.
