eddi got me a card that says "given enough coffee, i could rule the world." the note inside was sweet too :) it goes on my wall.

post-WWII U.S. is still thrilling. lasar is off-the-wall ridiculous and so brilliant.

it feels really good to use Thesis, my own work, as a reference - indeed, as my main resource - while i'm preparing for each lecture. tomorrow's lecture is on british whig cultural holdovers in american whig culture. we're going to do a class close reading of a couple of texts that convey this tension between a culture simultaneoulsy wrapped in english whig tradition and forging its own american whig identity. i hope beyond hopes i can get them talking. i'm going to make the texts into overheads and project them, and they'll get their own copies too, so we can talk about them as a class. this should also introduce them to the kind of close readings they'll have to do for their assignments. most of them are not lit students or history students, but students with random majors who needed five easy credits and thought my class could be the answer. i hope i can make it enjoyable for everyone.

doug and tyler have both been trying to get me to go to these movie gatherings at college 10 on a fairly consistent basis. i've been really shy and resisting, but tonight i went for it. i think it would have been easier for me if it was actually a "movie night" tonight instead of a surprise party for someone i didn't know. i was uncomfortable for parts of it, but i did manage to meet some new people. it's good for me to try things out like that, even though that's normally the kind of party that would make me want to crawl under a table and hide. i wasn't really upset, just kind of nervous. i'm glad i tried.

ok, bedtime. i have goals of being on campus super-early tomorrow to make sure everything for my class gets taken care of.
