*said with a heavy dose of sarcasm*
My brother is taking his family to Hawaii for Christmas next year. They're going to be there for about three weeks (seriously--not cool), and they were discussing all the things they planned to see/do/eat/whatever.
Naturally, with my family being history buffs, the WWII memorials came up. My brothers were discussing the USS Arizona, and my 16 year old niece (who hates history and finds it "boring") looked lost. Never mind the fact that, at 16, she should have learned at least SOMETHING about Pearl Harbor in school. She goes to a terrible school (I know from experience), and prefers science, so fine. Whatever.
But her mother, who also does not like history (nor reading, for that matter), turns to her and says, "Don't worry. We'll rent 'Pearl Harbor' before we go. It has all the history, but it's more interesting because it has a love story, too."
...
Yup. Ben Affleck makes history fun. I am SO GLAD my celebrity history teacher was Harrison Ford (middle school--oh, Indy, you will always be my first crush). It may not have been the most accurate depiction of events, but the timelines were generally correct and it got me excited about several historical periods. And the "love story" element was always relegated to a sideline, and largely existed for the sake of one-liners. Sigh.
