Welcome, 2008. 2007 wasn't bad, but I'm pretty sure 2008 promises to be better.
We had a nice New Year's Eve. I have a nasty cold, and I worked all afternoon at the mall on the 31st, so I shot back to my apartment and napped before heading out for the evening. Woke up, changed into a dress, tossed on a little makeup, and headed out the door to discover a couple inches of snow and more falling. Back inside to add jeans and change into boots for driving, then to Lily's Seafood, a great micro-brewery in Royal Oak. As the only girl in the party (Mitch and two friends, and a friend of a friend), they decided that I legitimized the gathering. I think the mini dress and snow bunny coat didn't hurt.
After dinner, we headed to a salsa club, where we were to meet up with another friend and his family. Unfortunately, they were just sitting down to eat (at 10:30!!), and probably weren't going to be done before the ball dropped, so we headed back to Mitch's for some GameCube, ping-pong, free booze and desserts. More friends decided to join us there (all girls), so we played Battle of the Sexes, and kicked the guys to the curb. By the end, one of them was making up questions to stop us. Frankly, the questions in that game are ridiculous, as they assume that women don't know how hammers work and don't watch movies, and that guys don't know French or anything about a kitchen. Regardless, having a future Navy pilot on our side didn't hurt, especially when asked the nicknames of WWII fighter planes.
Watched Dick Clark welcome 2008, while cringing at Ryan Seacrest (could he be any more of a tool?). Shocked to discover about 8 inches of snow had fallen when the girls left at 2am. Hung around for awhile with the guys, then decided that drinking plus excessive snow equaled not driving home, so had a slumber party with Mitch and Jimmy on cots in the living room. Fun times.
So the world is entirely white around here, quite beautiful, and from what I hear, only going to last until Saturday, when it's supposed to be around 40 degrees and rainy. Boo. But I think the blanket of snow on New Year's Eve/Day works very well, as it seems to provide a blank slate for the year to come.
