Eurovision Semis 2

Back again, with my thoughts on the second Semifinal. I think this was a bit more enjoyable than the first. Let's go!

Ordered by preference, numbered by performance order, final qualifiers in bold.

10 - Latvia - Why is this song reminding me of Kiss by Prince? Then belting and crazy electronic sparseness in the background instruments. I actually like this.

13 - Sweden - After the last semi and most of this one, I'd be down with some shitty Swedish pop... Wait, fake country? I'm liking the stage show here. I wouldn't be mad if this won, especially since I enjoyed Sweden hosting the contest. Yeah, I actually liked that quite a bit.

16 - Slovenia - What's with the headphones? Is she like Mary's brother in Something About Mary? AIR VIOLIN? The guy on the piano is hot. So, her voice has a very distinctively weird tone, but I like this song and she can sing well.

9 - Israel - What the fuck are those shoes? Oh hey, uptempo? And actual backup dancers. How is an Israeli act giving me Ricky Martin flashbacks? Interesting act, pyrotechnics, I can kinda forgive the singer being mediocre.

2 - Ireland - Isn't Jedward, so I'm already disappointed. Why do you only have a shitty upright piano, girl? Huh, this is slow, but I really like it. I like her voice, and she's singing in her range, which is sadly incredibly rare in Eurovision.

7 - Portugal - Singing in Portuguese. Song actually has tempo! The singer is dressed like Stevie Nicks. I like it, it's still kinda boring, but seems so very interesting in comparison to what came before it.

14 - Switzerland - You know, this year's contest seems quite gothy. This gir's got an even MORE Stevie Nicks-esque outfit...until she strips off the cloak to a white dress, aw. Oh yay, guitar solo. Her voice is pretty good, too.

11 - Azerbaijan - Is this song actually about werewolves? I can't understand half the words, but there's a shirtless guy crawling on the ground in the fog machine. Oh wait, there's a lady too, but they're bothdoing a crazy contemporary routine. Crazy falsetto from the singer...I think I have to like that. Probably the best entry from Azerbaijan I've seen.

1 - Lithuania - I'm generally underwhelmed by Lithuania, despite wanting to cheer for them because of my heritage. Started out pretty weak, the two main singers aren't that strong. Was good in the chorus, with the backups coming in--also liked the backup same sex kissing! Given our storied history, I'd like to think of that as a fuck you to Russia.

8 - Czech Republic - Another duet?! ...I think these two are stronger singers than the ones who've performed so far. This sounds like something from a Weber musical. Staging is boring, they walk towards each other, then walk away from each other. THROW SHOES!

4 - Montenegro - Another beautiful violinist. Is that this year's sub theme? Points for not being in English. The guy is a bit of a weak singer, though. First dancing of the night, and it's merely circles, for the most part. So...meh. I miss the dubstep astronauts.

15 - Cyprus - Why are we in black in white? This song's a blatant ripoff of something...is it To Be With You by Mr. Big? It's okay, but super boring. Sounds like an end credits song to a movie I wouldn't like.

17 - Poland - Another boring ballad, with bad CGI cloths floating in the background. I don't the singer sings particularly well. Should I mention she's in a wheelchair? I mean, Latvia's stage show was interesting enough and that singer didn't move, so Poland's got no excuse, right?

12 - Iceland - Oh no, immediately -- singing too low for her range. Turns out that range isn't her only problem...hitting notes in tune is also. And this is rather shit for Iceland, I have to say. I usually like them. Though it's uptempo enough, I would've appreciated this more five entries ago.

6 - Norway - Another ballad. Reminds me a bit of the entry from The Netherlands, actually, but both of these people can sing, at least.

5 - Malta - Another song called Warrior. (The first was Georgia's.) I can only make out about every fifth word...and I don't think it's an accent issue, it's an enunciation issue. There's some pyotechnics, but that's not really making this song any more exciting for me. Also kinda meh.

3 - San Marino - Finally found a new musical act! Unfortunately, I'm not sure the guy has made it through puberty yet. And neither one of them can decide which key they're singing in. WHICH MEANS THEY SHOULD HAVE A KEY CHANGE! AND ANOTHER! AND SPOKEN WORD! ...okay, I think I heard another key change, I think that was on accident. Wow, that was bad.

Goon Rating: Israel / Sweden / Slovenia / Latvia

Well, my top 4 picks got in, so I guess I can be happy about that. But Norway and Poland getting in is soooooo meh. Oh well. I never completely agree with the results. Looking forward to watching live on Saturday!
