For Belle [TR; Hurricane]

Sep 11, 2010 13:39

The weather had gotten rough as the day went on and Jacob had tried to stick close to the Homestead, not wanting Shari or Morgan to go out looking for him if they didn't have to. He was capable of taking care of himself, more than capable if his trek through dino country said anything about that, but it was more out of wanting to be around for ( Read more... )

Every time something slams against the walls, she jumps and exhales shakily, trying to remind herself that noises can't do anything to her and they're in a fairly well reinforced home. Still, she's on edge and her nerves are betraying her slightly. "Just don't go out there," she requests simply. "I don't like storms, icy or rainy."

"I wasn't planning on it," Jacob promised. "I don't do so well with flying debris and torrential rain. I've gotten soft hanging out here in paradise."

"Well, good, otherwise I might go crazy all alone in here," she tried to joke, staring at the books that surrounded her bed almost like a fortress and flashed him a weak smile. "Well, maybe the book pages would start talking to me first."

"Are you sure they don't do that anyway?" Jacob asked, looking around at the piles of books. The wind gusted loudly then and he jumped a little, frowning at the now-boarded up window.

"It's getting bad out there. We should do something to get our minds off it."

"I don't know, I think I've avoided getting to the point where I think books are speaking aloud," she admitted, a tiny and fretful echo in her tone. She patted the bed beside her, knowing that she didn't want to be alone in all this. "Maybe you should just come here, to start with."

Jacob was tempted to make a comment but Belle seemed a little scared, to him at least, so he just settled beside her on the bed and lifted one arm, offering for her to come close if she wanted.

"Well, if they ever start up, we'll know we lost it, right?"

She shuffled closer, grateful for his proximity and the way she snuck under his arm and fit just-so. It really did make her smile softly and she rested her cheek on his shoulder, feeling comfortable and secure. "At least we'll have lost our minds together," she mused with a hint of a sneaky grin.

"I'd rather lose it with you," Jacob agreed, then realized how that sounded. "My mind. Not uh...anything else. Right now."

Belle couldn't help her tiny and bemused smile, leaning in to press a soft kiss to his cheek, the sort she envisioned the maiden did with her brave knight at the end of a journey. She also felt her cheeks flare up suddenly at doing so and let out a very verbose, "Um."

"Um?" Jacob asked, smile getting just a little wider. "That's pretty descriptive, Belle. I mean, all those books you read and all you've got for me is 'um'?"

She pushed at his shoulder, just lightly enough to show that she didn't appreciate the teasing, but the push became a clutch when a particularly nasty huff of wind clattered at the window. "I'm not very verbose or witty with words when I'm unsure of my footing."

Jacob wrapped his arms around her tighter and kissed her forehead, holding her close.

"Don't worry about it, Belle. Do you think I'd let anything happen to you? No way."

Belle let out a soft laugh, appreciative of his proximity and his words and she curled in closer, aware that she might be having the thoughts she was as a result of the hurricane or perhaps a glimpse at her own mortality, but she didn't mind it in the least. "I just hope the roof holds out," she said with a glance upwards.

"It'll hold," Jacob said confidently. "Morgan and I spent hours on it and the windows earlier. This is probably one of the safest places on the whole island."

He pressed a kiss to the top of her hair. "Nothing's going to happen but boredom, promise."

Belle couldn't help curling in closer. She was so grateful to the men for doing the work and she wished she could do more, but she just wanted to ride out the storm and the thoughts that the weather brought, like those what-ifs and the maybes and all the things she pushed aside when she read her books.

She tipped her chin up, turning to face him and offering a shy smile. "Only boredom?"

"I personally am never bored when I'm with you," Jacob said, wincing when he realized how pathetic that sounded. "I really like your company, Belle. I promise. There's no place I'd rather be right now."
