...a week has past and apparently I'm going to try to have coherent thoughts about last week's mid-season finale (ok, so that doesn't sound right to me at all). Anywho.
First, Mikael:
...ok, so he's not a very nice person. Duh, I hear you say. But my beef, is basically he was never as menacing as everyone (ie. Anna) made me think he should be? And I know, I had the same issue with Klaus. Both Mikael and Klaus have a bigger off screen menace than the do on screen, and I think that's partly to do with how it's hard to be a legitimate evil mastermind these days. It's actually really hard to do terrifying, because audiences are pretty much desensitised, what with parodies, intertextuality, pop culture and every day life (or maybe that's just my life?)
So there's that, but also, Mikael? Just wasn't that scary. Mean? Yes? A dick? Yes. A horrible father? Yes. Terrifying? No.
So I don't know. Maybe I'm just disappointed that he didn't cause more havoc? I like my bad guys to cause havoc and be amoral.
Rebekah:
...man, so surprise favourite of S3? Or surprise favourite of S3?
Basically, Rebekah is my favourite. She is so bratty, but vulnerable and also sensible. And honestly, I really just want her and Caroline to be besties, because, well, it would be awesome! Except, um, clearly that's not going to happen.
And on that note: WTF was up with Caroline calling her a "blood slut"? I get that Caroline is jealous and threatened and hates her, and the name calling is totally accurate of how jealous, threatened teenage girls (and hell, grown women sometimes) act, but "blood slut"? Really? Couldn't she have come up with something, I don't know, wittier?
Basically, I really hate the word "slut." For me it is like how some people (really rather a lot of people I know anyway) hate the word "moist." The sound of it, regardless of it's meaning and/or movements to reclaim it, is just ugh, like nails on a chalkboard to me. I hate it.
Anyway, back to Rebekah and that scene with Elena and the necklace? Punch to the gut! And how she's all conflicted and vulnerable and basically, really, really human despite the whole Original vampire thing. Seriously. I luff her. And I wonder who's going to be the one to un-dagger her? (Ugh, I have a rant about verbing nouns, and yes, I know what I just did there).
OMG, what if she's teams up with Stefan rather than Klaus (or Elena)?!
Oh man, that would be awesome!
...ok, wow, that idea caused an unspeakable degree of happiness. Anyway, moving on.
Note: I am unspoiled for things to come and hope to remain so (because it is much more fun that way? Wait, no, it's not).
Tyler and Caroline:
Oh, man, Tyler is just so confused. Poor boy. I do understand and agree with where he's coming from, even though I don't agree on his methods (seriously, Caroline seems to undergo a high degree of torture this season, wait, every season), and I do think that the whole 'sired' thing hasn't really come to head for him, because even though he is Klaus' minion now, so far he's been Klaus' minion in absentia. Now that Klaus is back in Mystic Falls, perhaps his feelings of "OMG, no more being at the beck and call of the moon! Awesome!" may subside? I think it will all depend on how Klaus treats him, really. Already, he doesn't seem as much as a drone as the other Hybrids did (it seemed like Klaus had Compelled them...it was creepy). Although, continuity in this show seems to have a wee bit of problem.
And man, Caroline's silence? I just...my heart broke. Although, again, I totally understand where she's coming from too. So you know, it sort of seem like one of those inevitable things, really. So sad though.
But Caroline's protectiveness and I don't know, adoration? No, that's not quite right? I guess there's still residual emotional baggage there, towards Matt is starting to be a bit creepy too. It's understandable, yes, but also, something she needs to acknowledge and deal with.
Man, look at how layered these secondary characters are! Ah, show!
Speaking of layered characters: Klaus!
I missed Klaus! I know I complained that he wasn't terrifying enough before, and to be honest, I do think Stefan is more terrifying than Klaus (part of me thinks I have to justify that statement, but um, come on 1920s flashback ep, there you go).
Anyway, Klaus! He is hilariously dramatic and over the top, and basically just a woobie and man, I just have SO MUCH SYMPATHY. Is there something wrong with me? Is it bad that I am totally on board for a Klaus and Team Elena merger? And Klefan is totally a thing that happened, right? I just, I don't know, draw so much entertainment from watching him manoeuvre people (and their emotions) around with strategy, and then wonder why he is always alone forever. Seriously, his face when Stefan called at the end? The absolute joy, that Stefan was calling? At the same moment when he was about to set his family free? How can you not love Klaus? How?
Anyway, I was really glad that Damon's plan failed, because I really don't want to see Klaus die. I am totally ok, with him being 'unkillable' so long as he is always unhappy and trying to fill the void. I think that is a fair trade off. Honestly. Entertainment wise.
Ok, and so I suppose I should talk about Katherine? Except, I don't know. Katherine has never really inspired me much? Anyway, props go to Nina Dobrev, because as soon as Matt walked in with 'Elena,' I was like, hmmm, Elena sure is dressing like Katherine these days (it's something I've actually noticed in other eps, Elena is dressing like Katherine these days). And lo, this time it was actually Katherine!
And ok, I lie a little, because I do like Katherine, but more than that I'm a proud (really? proud?) owner of a Katherine/Damon shipper heart. So I liked that they teamed up on this, I liked that Katherine 'saved' Damon. I like Katherine admitted that she loved Damon and Stefan. And more than that I like were Katherine and Damon are now in their relationship. It's more balanced. So that made me happy.
And I don't really have much to say about Damon. Or Elena. Or Damon/Elena. Because yeah, we know where that's going and there's no suspense, I guess. At least not yet. I mean, both of them are growing and changing, but not in any way that is unpredictable at the moment. So you know not really much to talk about.
Stefan, on the other hand? When did Stefan become interesting? Wait, it was last episode. Anyway, Stefan, bring it on, brother. Bring it on.
...anyway, my comments re: Nina's acting has made me remember that for like ages now I've been meaning to comment that all the shows that have really drawn me in this year have had the same actors playing multiple characters. I mean, Boomer on BSG was pretty much the thing that hooked me because it was just fascinating as well as Boomer being pretty much adorable and easy to relate to.
And basically Grace Park sold it. Sure the writing was really tight at the start too. "Water" as an episode pretty much still holds my attention all the way through, and yeah, I felt SO much for Boomer/Athena/Eight all the way through the series even when shit was getting weird and nonsensical. Tricia Helfer didn't sell the Sixes quite the same way, but they were different sorts of characters, so that could explain it.
...speaking of Grace Park, I am late to the H50 party, I know, and I only watched it because I read some meta and it was pretty convincing meta about subtext and then I found out it had James Marsters and Larisa Oleynik guest starring (what?).
Anyway, after the most recent ep on here (we're like a couple of weeks behind) I've decided that my original reasons for not watching it still stand, and I don't know how people who live on Hawaii watch it (do they watch it? I should ask my Grandma) because man, it's not they they get things about Oahu wrong (it's a bit exaggerated, sure) or that I am that familiar with it (considering) but there are so many times where I'm just thrown out because they mention things or there are setting shots and I am just like, 'oh my Grandma has a story...' or 'oh I've been there' or 'oh that's where insert random relative/family friend here did crazy random thing here' and I just. I start giggling. For reasons totally unrelated to the show.
Anyway, that is my story. (And my Grandma always has a story).
...also, I thought this would be fun, because I am SO shippy and involved in fandom right now and all (erm, yeah, okay, so I am trying my best to get back into it because have I mentioned how much thinking hurts these days and how I cannot stop with all of the thoughts).
(1) Think of up to 25 ships you support.
(2) List them using descriptions of the characters involved rather than their names.
(3) Have your f-list guess as many of the ships as they can.
1. She is a weapon and he likes guns. See also: knives.
2. He's not a stick in the mud in his dreams.
3. He might have a green thumb, but unfortunately she's not a plant, but a snake and his track record with those, well...it doesn't end well for the snake.
4. A bird may love a dog, ser, but where would they live?
5. Nobody ever said she couldn't love them both. Or even that she loved him first.
6. There once was a bear living in a cave. He lives there still, chained by the goddess-angel.
7. She cut off his hand. He still gave her earrings.
8. As a boy, he saved the Lady of Shalott as she floated down the river on a barge.
9. He has known few truly accomplished ladies. She may or may not be one of them.
10. It started with domestic violence and ended in an airlock.
11. If only she weren't so judgy. Oh, and if he weren't the living undead.
12. For him, it's not just about the money, but that certainly helps.
13. He wouldn't always alone (forever), if only he would realise his true nature.
Man, I didn't even get to 20. I tried so hard, but I am not much of a dedicated shipper, unless we start going into the icky world of Australian Politics RPF for which we know I ship forever Malcolm Turnbull/Leather Jacket and Malcolm Fraser/Labor Party (OMG, you guys, if you didn't see that media session in 2009 then, man did you miss out!). Also not Australian Politics, but vaguely related and should be noted: Kate Adie/Everybody for she is amazecakes.
Ok, ok, the ships listed above are all fictional (except one, because truly is is a real romance of the ages and cannot be denied!). And to help, the fandoms include: ASOIAF, HP, TVD, BSG, AoGG, P&P, Firefly, Obernewtyn, Gruen (that is so a fandom ok?), Peninsula/The Thief 'verse and Inception.
...Do you think this post is long enough?
