Well folks, it's all through but for the whining. The final is due on Tuesday, my last paper is due on Friday, and everything else is just a walk in the park. Time for me to figure out how I'm going to spend my summer.
1. Summer classes. As most of you know, I'll be deeply entrenched in German 101 and German 102 this summer, so that's going to keep me busy through July. I am not looking forward to this at all, but it has to be done. Should be interesting, as I've always wanted to learn the language that conquers Europe every quarter-century or so.
2. Reading Lists. With prelims right around the corner, proverbially, I need to start reading for exams now. It all starts with the reading list, which I'll start making up in a couple of weeks.
3. Spend time outdoors. I really loved being outside when I was a kid. Hiking, camping, fishing, you name it, I loved it. It's fallen off a good deal as I've been in college, but I think that this is the summer that I'm going to spend a lot of my free time outside. It's a cheap vacation every weekend. I'm planning on visiting every county park in Story County, hitting Ledges several times, as well as the Neil Smith Wildlife Refuge. Lots of fishing and hiking, and I'm sure that I'll hit the campgrounds a couple of times before it gets God-awful hot and nasty, as Iowa is wont to in the late summer. Don't forget folks, free fishing weekend is the first weekend in June.
4. Hit the Mall of America. What better way to celebrate the enduring nature of love than to visit the symbol of America's enduring self-destructive love of capitalism and personal fulfillment at the MoA.
5. Read. For fun and for profit. I finished Walden yesterday, so I'm starting Thoreau's Week on the Concord and Merrimac Rivers tomorrow. I want to read for fun this summer, as well as prepare for fields.
6. I don't know, something else will hit me. I have a small job to do for the department, but nothing that will kill a lot of time. I just want to have fun this summer.
I hope that all of you can enjoy your summer as well, and that your fun in the sun provides with you much needed relaxation and rest. Recharge your soul and do what you need to have fun. We'll see you in the fall.
