Character Notes:
History: There once was a girl--a princess--who had fallen into a deep despair. The queen and king had died in a terrible accident. The princess was inconsolable, even though a few tried to calm her. "No," she would say. "I've only learned that nothing lasts. Why should I?"
When all was lost and the darkness seemed too unbearable alone, a traveling prince upon a shining white horse found the lonely princess. He brushed away her tears. The princess thought he smelled like roses. "Never lose your strength or your nobility," said the prince while handing her a ring with the imprint of a rose on it. "If you don't, this ring will lead you to me again one day."
The prince left her behind, then. So impressed was she that the princess swore to take up the name of a prince in his honor. Such are the memories of a child--even she cannot remember how it truly happened.
The princess grew and left the title of princess behind her. She became just Utena Tenjou, a student of Ohtori academy. Popular and well-liked but just a student who drove the teachers to frustration by wearing a boy's uniform.
One of her closest friends is Wakaba. Wakaba fell in love with the Student Council vice-president, Saionji. She sent him a love-letter but he was callous and posted it for the entire school to see. Utena would not stand for this. She tore down the letter, admonishing those who laughed. It was only later did she realize that Wakaba sent it.
Deeply angered, Utena challenged Saionji to a duel. Saionji almost declined until he saw the ring she wore. He accepted--and from that moment on did Utena's life change once again.
She went to the dueling arena that Saionji mentioned to her with only a wooden sword. Saionji was not alone. With him was a quiet girl named Anthy Himemiya, the Rose Bride. Anthy puts a rose on Utena's school uniform and on Saionji's. She takes her time with Utena, seeming to give her approval. The winner has to knock the other duelist's rose off. Utena is confused by the arena, by Anthy (who she refers simply to as 'Himemiya'), by Saionji's own demeanor.
Saionji's blade is the Sword of Dios, drawn from Himemiya's chest. Utena is outmatched--soon her wooden training sword is sliced in half. Yet she still wins. Thus starts both Utena Tenjou's reign as dueling champion and her engagement to Rose Bride Himemiya.
The next day Utena is transfered to an old dormitory. Only Himemiya, Utena, and Himemiya's pet monkey live there. Himemiya tells her that this is the way of the rose duels and that she is now hers. Utena rebels. When Saionji challenges her again, she accepts. She plans to throw the match but still she wins.
So the young princess becomes the champion of the Rose Bride, still on the path to her prince.
Personality: Utena tries to be a 'prince': noble, loyal, strong. Physically there is no doubt that she is strong. Her athletic prowess is much admired in the Academy--mainly among the female crowd, it must be said. The boy teams even occasionally ask if she wants to join their team. She says 'no' each time.
She sees the world in black and white. The Rose Duels are 'wrong' because they aren't 'normal'. Anthy should be 'normal', not the Rose Bride. What is normal? Utena's not sure but it's clearly not the way Anthy currently acts. So, in her world view, Anthy should be protected until she becomes more 'normal'. She doesn't see Anthy as Anthy Himemiya--she sees her as Himemiya, a girl who can't stand up for herself and who needs rescuing. Later on Utena changes her mind but from the early point where I'm taking her from, her stance is clear: Anthy's problems are clearly because of her own actions. After just meeting her, Utena is ready to throw Anthy back to the wolves so she can return to a normal life. She's critical of the other duelists for objectifying Anthy. She is unaware of her hypocrisy until much later.
Needless to say, that doesn't happen.
Utena is a protector. A role of a prince is to protect, be it a friend (Wakaba) or a damsel (Anthy) or their own self. She can become so focused on defending or fighting for an ideal, she shuts off all other possibilities. Betrayal, manipulation...these are things that Utena's world view doesn't accept. She simply doesn't accept that they can happen to her.
Even as a child, if you told her something was true? You would have to prove it to her. During the depression that happened after her parents death, she was told that it was not the end. She retorted, "Prove it. Show me something eternal."
But if she came up with the assumption herself--that her 'prince' is a force of infallible good, that anything not 'normal' needs to be changed, that Himemiya is a normal girl who needs rescuing--then she believes it whole-heartedly until that belief is shattered. This is both to her advantage and detriment. Those who know this about her frequently use these assumptions to their own advantage.
With these absolute thoughts come some of Utena's major flaws: her innocent naiveness. She keeps to her assumptions, her 'prince' view of the world. Utena is the hero of her life's fairy tale and, as such, she knows exactly what needs to be done. Wakaba gets humiliated? Challenge the source of her embarrassment to a fight.
Are her actions rash and sometimes misguided? Yes, yes they are. Her world view may be misguided and simple to manipulate but she's good-hearted: she only wants to protect.

Wiki First Person (entry type): I swear that one teacher has it out for me! She thinks I'm ruining the school, honestly. How could I ruin the school by refusing to wear the girl uniform? I mean, sure, it looks okay. On other people. It's not me and it'll never be.
I mean, come on. I'm not ruining anything by not wearing it and I'm not breaking any rules. Some people...
Oh, and Himemiya wants to make dinner again. Another night of shaved ice, can you believe it? Sheesh, I think I'm going to have to cook it this time or get her to go over to the dining hall. Maybe I'll just order out. Man, I just made myself hungry!
Third Person: The basketball bounces easily down the court. Utena's lucky to get the basketball court all to herself for a few moments. Himemiya is off with her roses, like always. Maybe next time Utena should mention Himemiya to play a couple of rounds with her.
But she'd just say, 'If you say so, Utena-sama'. Utena would end up spending the entire game trying to half-convince Himemiya not to call her that and just play the stupid game. Then she'd feel mildly annoyed with herself for snapping at her.
The ball bounces against the backboard and Utena catches it with the ease of a practice athlete. Himemiya should stand up for herself. She let herself become the Rose Bride and, well, Utena guesses it's her job to get her out of it.
Utena's gaze drops to the basketball in her hands. The glint of the ring on her finger catches her eyes. "Yeah," she says, half to herself and half to the ring. She'll make sure that Himemiya the Rose Bride will become Himemiya the girl. That's what protecting someone meant and the stupid Student Council didn't seem to want to let up.
When her next shot missed the rim, Utena didn't even notice.
