so what is it like in australia?

Golly, where to start? I used to live with an American who came from New York / Baltimore (or 'Ballimuh' as she called it), and last year I was in Upper State New York, so I have some idea about the differences.

The big big difference is climate. Australia's in the Southern Hemisphere so the seasons are 6 months different from North America. It's summer here right now and normally it'd be boiling hot on Xmas day, but there's a cool wet change and it's nice. Australia's about a 1/3 the size of the USA, so climate varies a lot from State to State, and even within. I come from Western Australia (WA) originally and that stretched mild temperate to tropical. Perth, where I lived most of my life, is now mostly dry and hot (they have water shortages). The Hunter Valley, in New South Wales (NSW), is more temperate and wet, which is one reason I live here.

There's very little snow in Australia and most which is here is restricted to the the "Great Dividing range" which runs down the east coast, and to parts of Tasmania. Global warming and climate change is a political issue over here, with chronic water shortage problems driving that (most of NSW has been declared in drought). There's a climate here to suit any one.

As far as culture goes, we still tend to have a bit of a "cultural cringe" in that a lot of people here believe that we don't have one! Most of our media (films, TV) gets imported from the UK and USA with a smattering of other world stuff. While there's "flag waving" here, ask some one what it all means and they may not be able to answer. Supposedly our economy is good. I don't know. I've been on a disability allowance for the last 9 years though I might be getting a job in a library real soon. We just had an election here and the previous government was dumped with a thud (the then current Prime Minister even lost his seat)! If you have technical skills and qualified, there's a good chance you could find work here (if that's what you're thinking of).

We have a public health system here, as well as private insurance.  I'm constantly amazed at how expensive it is for folk overseas to get basic health care.

When I was up near Albany, New York (I used to live in Albany, WA) last year, everything looked a lot like the Central Coast here in NSW. Small towns with regional shopping centres. Between Newcastle and Sydney the public transport is relatively good, so a lot live in this area.
