Duela Dent
Batman
209 words
Duela Dent-- she'd have to research marriages soon, no reason it shouldn't be legitimate before the baby was born-- looked at the grandfather clock. It chimed the hour. The young woman knew she should have been asleep hours ago. She had a meeting with a client, newly sent to Arkham; Duela had promised herself she'd go to bed at midnight on nights she had to get up. Still, here she was-- staring as the minute hand moved. Two o'clock in the morning.
"If he isn't back by two, I go to bed."
Duela felt eight again. Back in the apartment, she watched her mother. Nadine stood at the window, looking at the sidewalk. She cradled her cellphone. As far as she knew, her daughter had been asleep for hours.
"You don't need to come over, Jonathan. I'm okay, I promise. Thank you for calling."
Nadine knew nothing of the little girl who watched her every move. She fought back tears as she slumped onto the couch, ignoring the digital clock that read 2:06.
Duela wiped tears from her eyes. She breathed a sigh of relief as she heard the front door open. Hopefully the Scarecrow's expedition had been successful, but Duela really didn't care much. All that mattered was that Jonathan had come home.
