Four hours of training and finally he was going to enjoy the fruits of his labor. Finally he'd make it to the top of the tree and look down in triumph at that idiot who'd thought he could beat Uchiha Sasuke.
But then his foot slipped.
His grip gave beneath him and his shoe began to scrape down the tree's rough bark even while his momentum forced him to continue lifting his foot to take another step that would never hold. His foot never even touched the trunk before he began to fall.
Disappointed in himself, Sasuke started to twist around to catch himself on a passing branch, but when he turned, he slammed right into a particularly sturdy one. The wind knocked out of him, his body instinctively rolled away from the thing that had hit him and kept falling.
As he fell, too shocked by the blow to react, he knew he was going to hit the ground and it was going to hurt. He shut his eyes and braced himself.
But the brutal kiss of the ground never came. Instead, when he opened his eyes, Sasuke found himself in Naruto's arms, looking up into his baby blues.
"Are you okay?" Naruto asked, sounding genuinely concerned.
Sasuke blinked and then shoved the blond away and struggled to his feet. "What the hell did you do that for, idiot?"
"I saved you from bellyflopping into the ground, teme!" Naruto said indignantly as he scowled at the Uchiha.
"I didn't ask you to!"
"So?! We're teammates! It's my job!" he shouted, but then calmed himself before continuing softly. "I'll always be there to catch you when you fall. And you'll do the same for me. Right?"
Sasuke turned his back to Naruto and frowned hard at the ground. Reluctantly, he answered, "Yeah."
