It was a dark night when the Queen ventured out onto the New York streets. There was still traffic and so she stayed within the shadows, alleys and backways, away from the people and lights. She walked past dumpsters and curiously inspected them. They had just been emptied and were not as interesting as during her past inspections. She continued down the alley until something across the bright road caught her attention. It was another Alien Queen.
She hissed and it seemed to echo back a hiss of recognition. The Queen’s head cocked. Was it one of her brood sisters? Had one survived? Hesitantly she stepped out into the light and gazed down the street. There were no cars and only a few pedestrians in the distance. The Queen tentatively stepped onto the street. Still no attack, no aggression and so her confidence began to build. The next step was more confident and her sister too was coming down the adjacent alleyway to meet her.
The excitement rose to a fevered pitch and she clicked in joy. This time her counterpart didn’t answer. Her head turned and she noticed the other Queen did the same. Tentatively she reached out and the other Queen did the same. The Queen recoiled in fear examining the figure before her more closely. Once more she reached out toward the other alien. Her long nails scraped against something smooth surface producing an aggravating squeak. With an angry hiss she recoiled a second time. Was she imprisoned? The Queen debated looking upon the other Queen.
Observing the barrier for a long moment she stepped forward and pressed on it with her deadly forepaw. The glass shattered and the Queen jumped back terrified. Where had the other Queen gone? The Queen looked down among the shards littering the ground vainly attempting to understand the recent events.
With a click of confusion the Queen turned and continued down the street. Again she saw the Queen appear beside her. She was now bleeding on her forearm. Someone had injured her. The Queen snarled. She studied the brood mate one last time before a sound caught her attention. Her senses turned down to investigate the sound. Blood dripped from her arm to the ground. Confusion set in as the Queen looked between her arm and that of the other alien. She still didn’t understand. Once more she reached out to touch the barrier smearing blood on the window with her claws.
The Queen squeaked excitedly as she touched the glass. It was her! She looked closely at the reflection. She had never seen herself before. The Queen was intrigued as she touched her face. Then the screaming started. Whirling around she saw the crowd forming. The angry terror was something she was familiar with and instinct pushed her to flee without another glance at herself in the darkened window.
