OKAY BUT (and take this with a grain of multi-shipper salt, because in addition to the feelings I am about to have at you, I have read and loved Sherlock/Joan already and ship them like burning. I mean, aside from Lucy Liu's overwhelming hotness and their back-and-forth dynamic and everything about them that is awesome, JESUS SHOW HOW MUCH HARDER CAN YOU HIT MY SICK!FIC BUTTON, WITH THE TEA AND THE CARETAKING AND THE WORRIES ABOUT SHERLOCK DYING OF EXPOSURE LIKE OH MY ACTUAL GOD): I don't feel like this is a show/fandom where this criticism is really necessary. Because, like, okay, if Detective Bell was a white dude I would totally be right there with you, or if Alfredo (because that's the other slash pairing I'm seeing crop up in discussion) was a white dude I'd be right there with you, but...they're not? Like, this is not "Let me skip over the lady to provide myself some more white dick/white dick!" And if what we've got here is a fandom with the main het pairing being the lead/a badass POC and the main slash pairing being the lead/a badass POC, then I'm not sure the "You're only doing this because you don't like the lady," card really needs to get played. Either direction people go here is a direction that more people need to be going in, a direction that huge chunks of fandom are shitty and terrible about, a direction fandom usually OVERWHELMINGLY avoids.

I mean, it's not that I don't see where you're coming from, and it's not that I don't personally think that the "I only ship Holmes/Watson if they're dudes!" argument is bullshit. It is totally bullshit. But a) this is a specific iteration of Holmes and Watson where Watson is currently being paid to keep Sherlock on the straight and narrow addiction-wise, which is going to automatically draw some ethical lines for some people and b) there are a lot of folks who are in fandom specifically because slash works for them and het doesn't. There just are. I'm not saying that's right or wrong or really anything--that's just the way it is. Some people do need two dicks in a relationship to be interested in reading about it, and people can't always rethink their choices when it comes to attraction, whether we wish they would or not. And if folks who want slash are looking at Elementary and NOT doing what fandoms usually do, which is almost always "Find literally any excuse not to ship a slash pairing with a black guy in it," (ShawnGus being the first of many examples that comes to mind), then I have a hard time discouraging them from shipping as they ship, and I have a hard time finding a problem with it?

tl;dr: I am multishipping the shit out of everybody up in this brownstone/police station/crime scene/city, but I don't feel like any way people go here is wrong. (Except Sherlock/Gregson, because no, and Joan/Liam, because for real, fuck that underserving asshole so much.)

Yeah, that's very true, I do need to take into account that this is already a fandom that has weeded out most of the people who went "EW GIIIIRLS" and refused to even give the show a chance. And totally, totally agreed on the fact that lead/POC needs to be a thing that happens more (ShawnGus yes and also from Leverage people shipping Eliot/Nate instead of Eliot/Hardison just just rrrgh *kicks things*)--I was just getting hung up on the feeling that...like, a woman in a ship is SO BAD that they'll settle for a black dude just this once. WHICH IS NOT FAIR TO THE PEOPLE IN THIS FANDOM, I SHOULDN'T EXPECT SO LITTLE OF THEM. *hangs head*

And yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah side-eyeing anyone who thinks Joan/Liam is a viable ship, ugh, no, let that unhealthy clusterfuck sit forever on the ocean floor.
