thinking thinky thoughts about Sam Winchester
Okay so--first off, I'm going to make a point of posting more! At least once a day (should be easy, I hope) because I miss you guys and tumblr is seriously such a time suck. \o/
But I've been hearing a lot of SPN grumbling on the grapeline recently, specifically about Sam, and I thought I'd share my thoughts.
Sam is a podperson!
No, he's not. We had podperson Sam once before (soulless Sam) and it'd be too much like repeating themselves, even for SPN.
Sam is tired. There is literally only so much stress a person can be under before they go into survival mode and give up. YES, GIVING UP IS A SURVIVAL THING. Because it's either that or being terrified, all the time. It just doesn't work.
Sam would never not look for his brother
As much as Dean has abandonment issues, Sam has been left behind A LOT. When the Trickster pulled that mystery spot shit, when Dean actually went to Hell, when Dean decided they shouldn't hunt together anymore, when Sam was in Hell and Dean couldn't get him out. So Sam has just been left AGAIN, and he has NO IDEA where his brother is or how to find him. WHERE DOES HE EVEN START? With Crowley? Oh yeah, because taking on the king of hell ALONE is a fantastic idea.
Let's not forget the last time Sam looked for his brother he nearly self-destructed. It took Ruby and an addiction to keep him alive long enough for Dean to get out of Hell. It's self-preservation--and probably an unhealthy dose of deluding himself into believing that somehow his brother will find a way back to him.
(Plus there's a wonky timeline in this too: Sam left Amelia the same night he drove to the cabin where Dean found him. As far as we know, he didn't even say goodbye. He just left, and went to the one place he had family on the anniversary of Dean being taken from him, and we're just going to buy that's a coincidence? No, come on, at the very least it's mourning, at the most it could get...pretty dark.)
Sam would never want to stop being a hunter for a normal life, not now
What are Winchesters good at? Blame. Sam can probably look over their time spent together and blame himself for every bad thing that happened--I am not saying he SHOULD, but this is SAM. If he wants to, he can logic himself into believing that everything is his fault because he died.
Dean wouldn't have sold his soul if Sam hadn't died. Dean wouldn't have gone to Hell, Sam wouldn't have lost his mind and become a demon blood junkie in revenge. Lilith wouldn't have been killed. Lucifer wouldn't have been released. Neither would the leviathans. Cas would be way more angelic. The world has gone to shit and I can guarantee Sam has found a way to blame himself for it.
So normal--more importantly quiet--has to seem like his only option. Touching supernatural things fucks up the world. He is an orphan in every sense of the word, he is alone. "Normal" isn't about what it used to mean, 2.5 kids and a little mcmansion--Sam just wants to stop hurting people. And he doesn't think Dean needs him anymore.
Jared is excited about it so it must mean they're weaning Sam off the show so he can be with his wife and kid
Wtf. Okay, this is JARED. Do you remember how excited he was about Soulless!Sam? SO EXCITED. He's excited about ACTING. And fucking with our emotions and giving us great storylines. Sure it could be possible Jared wants more time with Gen and the baby, in which case WHO COULD FUCKING BLAME HIM. But until it's confirmed? Seems highly unfreaking likely.

- Sam thinks he's replaceable and that Dean has already replaced him
- Sam will try to use this as proof that he should stop hunting
- Sam might even stop hunting for a bit because this is SPN and it likes us in pain
- BUT THEN
- DEAN WILL HAVE TO DO SOMETHING FOR SAM TO PROVE IT ISN'T SO
- THAT SAM IS IRREPLACEABLE
- AND THAT HE LOVES SAM
- MORE THAN ANYTHING
- BENNY WAS A PISS POOR SUBSTITUTION
- BECAUSE THIS IS THE EPIC LOVE STORY OF SAM&DEAN
- So be happy excited. This is our show.
