Prom + Standard Chartered Job!

Dec 08, 2008 22:29

First things first, prom! I should have posted this like eons ago, but I just kept procrastinating and now I don't think that my frame of thoughts are one of a girl who was dizzy with excitement about the prom. However, looking back, I wasn't exactly excited or particularly thrilled about the prom, I guess it was because I had no expectations about the prom and was just there to have fun and move on on a good note. Regardless, it was fun getting the opportunity to dress up, eat and take oddles of photos.

My favourite dish was the cold platter, which was the first dish. I thought that everything tasted great in the first dish! The duck was great and so was the jellyfish and the prawns too! The sharks' fin wasn't too bad too! Other than that, I thought that the mango pudding was great too, but the portion was unfortunately too small!

Halfway through the meal, Shel and YH came by my table and we set off to look for ZH, Jane and MJ. We took tons of photos and I had a lot of fun just standing there and watching the guys get up to their usual antics.

At the end, most of the people went back home, while XL, JM, BP and I stayed along with some of the guys in the room that Bryan's parents booked for him. It was quite cool that I stayed at a 5 star hotel, but honestly I thought that the hotel did not really live up to its reputation. I shan't complain, afterall I did not have to pay for my stay there, but my heart really ached at the thought of forking $470 for that room.

Okay, I'm done with prom! Actually the whole point as to why I wanted to blog today was to record my experience and thoughts after working at the Standard Chartered Marathon as a surveryor. My day started off at 7 and I went straight to the Padang to assemble with the other people who were also working. I ended up in group 7, which essentially comprised of the people who came to work alone (without their friends), because this job was actually offered to polytechnic students and they formed teams to work together. Anyway, I got to know 2 really nice people. I cannot remember the girl's name but I remember that she works at Zara (by the way, she told me that there is no staff discount, so people who are comtemplating to work at Zara to get cheaper clothes can banish that thought). I also got to know this guy name Chuck. I remember his name as towards the later part of the job, I partnered with him because I was too slow.

Anyway, the group of us were assigned to survey people who ran the 10km marathon, and we were told that those who ran the 10km marathon wore a blue bib. Initially, I was really anxious because I was afraid that people might turn me down because the survey takes slightly more than 10 minutes. However, as time passed, I realised that I was actually having fun.

E.g
Sita : So did anyone come down to support you today? (Part of the survey questions)
Poor person who has to endure 10 minutes of questioning: No.
Sita: *Does sad face*

I actually had fun joking with the people and chatting with them like they were my friends. However, I think that slowed me down a little, and I was actually lagging behind by a few surveys, so the team leader, Derrick, paired me up with Chuck, so that we could survey a group of people together. The guy was actually quite nice and encouraging, and I found out that he wants to do relief teaching too! I should have asked him for his number =X It would be nice to know how he intends to cajole his teachers into letting him return to his alma mater to teach, so that I can use the same methods. There would be no competition anyway, since he wants to teach Maths and Science, while I want to teach English and Chinese.

Towards the end, I just managed to hit my quota. When I went to collect my pay from the team leader, Derrick, he told me "See, you did it!". He was actually a really nice person, because when I was lagging behind, he never scolded me or said anything remotely close to sounding mean, instead he paired me up to work with Chuck. Thus, though I am horribly sunburnt now, I was glad that I went for the job, because I met really nice, helpful and friendly people. Through them, I realised that not all colleagues have to be rivals (unlike my previous retail job).

Though I probably will never see my ex-colleagues or even the people I surveyed again, but I am very thankful for the experience. The surveyees were patient, so who says Singaporeans aren't a nice and helpful bunch? (:

BY THE WAY, I AM CHANGING MY NAME TO ELENORA. =D
