A rant about manga vs. anime.

So, I'm wondering if liking manga more than anime makes me a bitch. It irritates me far more than it should that the majority of fans don't even touch a series until there's a shiny new anime out for it, and that the general consensus seems to be "omfg, anime is soooo much better!!!1" and "manga is boring because there's no color :(". I sometimes ( Read more... )

Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but here's the deal with me: I don't download manga, I usually buy it. It is more out of habit then anything else and I don't really like to just download everything. Not that I find fault in the people who do, I just don't. So for me watching the anime is cheaper, especially since I have netflix.

Also I find reading more difficult then watching something. My attention span is pretty bad when it comes to reading. It has nothing to do with it being black and white. I just take forever to finish a manga series. Gravitation, for instance, I started years ago, yet I'm only on vol. 7. While I totally agree 100% the manga is better then the anime, I just can't sit down and read for very long. Same goes for other manga.

Although, I must admit, when watching anime it is far easier to tell characters apart and learn how to pronounce their names. In some of these mangas I really have to squint to see which character is which because they all look the same sometimes. Other then that, I don't care about the art.

So for me, it isn't a matter of which is better. It is a matter of which one can I finish faster? That's usually the anime, I'm afraid.

Now I only buy mangas that don't have animes, because that's just how my brain operates. Ever since my anxiety disorder, I've not been able to sit and read more then 30 minutes at a time. I can't do it. Not even for college. I have to take constant breaks, but that isn't the case for watching something.

That is at least more honest than probably 90% of people who watch anime...I only buy things if I really like them, otherwise I just go for the unofficial stuff floating around on the internets. I'm almost certain most people just download everything and prefer anime because it's colorful and moves and makes noise. :p And I kind of think if it's hard to tell characters apart, that's failure on the part of the creator...I can't think of any series I really like where I have that problem. :\

There is like, only one series that I prefer the anime to the manga, and that's Ouran. I don't really like the weird shoujo-style manga has in most cases, which is probably why I don't normally read shoujo, and Ouran's animation style is just kind of fun. :D; But then, I haven't seen that much of that anime, either...

I've been thinking about jumping on the netflix wagon, but haven't gotten around to it because, um, I am cheap and lazy. Maybe someday if I actually have a job I'll do that. It's so hard to find dubs to watch when I don't feel like giving my whole attention to something in order to read what's going on.

Thanks. Nah, I don't prefer it because of the pretty pictures. XD I think people who feel that way are just narrow minded. It's just a time/money/concentration thing for me. Although, I must say it is as hard watching subbed anime as it is reading manga for me, which pretty much proves it. There's no doubting that quite a bit of manga is better the anime, mostly because it tends to condense the plot, like Gravitation and Yami no Matsuei.

Oh, some of them are just really, really hard to tell. Like Wild Adapter. Omg, I love it to death, but it is really really hard to tell some people apart. The only way I can truly tell the difference between Tokito and Kubto is the glasses. XD And Gravitation is hard to because of the constant hair style changes.. And Earthian! Omg, it has little to no shading and although the art is pretty, everyone pretty much looks the damn same.

I think Netflix is worth the money, but probably only if you are a big movie watcher as well as anime.

Aw, I've been wanting to get Wild Adapter, since I'm like, in love with that artist's style. I also want one of her artbooks so I can drool all over it. XD But I guess for now I'll just content myself with my Saiyuki. ♥

I tried reading Gravitation once...like, sitting around in bookstores. It didn't hold my interest somehow, but maybe someday I'll try again. :D; I've never read Earthian at all though.

I'm not so big on movies, but there are a few I'd like to see...but my mom watches stuff a lot too, so maybe between the two of us it'd be worth it. Maybe I'll ask her about it later.
