How many ways can you photograph a stone circle?

garienos and I went on our annual visit to Avebury (a stone circle big enough to have village in it for those who don't know)  a few weekends ago before this steaming weather started. It's also a good time to go because there are less fly-by tourists and it allowed me to take a few photos of the stones when there weren't too many people about.

That is an empty part of the henge (stones removed or buried, not sure which) and the Cove (two left of three stones making a box-like structure) standing in the middle of this area. This is a specific sort of Megalithic layout only found in the South West of the UK and another can be found at Stanton Drew. The photo also shows the outer bank of the henge and beyond that the circle of higher ground which surrounds Avebury and which has other important sites (like tumuli and round barrows) dotted around it. There is a panoramic shot here which I am linking to rather than posting as it is rather huge.

You can also play 'Where's garienos' in this photo too as he was having a walk round the outside of the henge while I was taking pictures.

These are two of the Avebury grazing team who keep the grass from getting too long. I am beginning to start thinking I look like a farmer as, like other animals and birds I meet all the time they wanted me to feed them!

More stones and sheep, and for those who remember Children of the Stones that one in the far corner was near where Dai was found dead.

An unusual view of the other side of the circle, taken through a hole in the wall surrounding the Methodist Chapel in the village. It is interesting that the Methodists seem to have no problem with having their place of worship either (a) in the circle [the actual village church is outside the henge] and (b) made out of broken up stones.

The trees and that part of the henge are where, in Children of the Stones, Matt damags his bike coming home from school and nearly hitting Dai. This is where he first meets him.
