Agh!

Aug 10, 2009 13:30

I turned on my laptop this morning, went to go talk to someone, came back, and smelled BURNING. The computer appears fine, except that the fan makes quite a racket, and whenever it's on for more than 5 minutes you can smell burning and see soot accumulating in the corner of the screen. I managed to track down a computer repair guy nearby who doesn't seem set on ripping me off, so hopefully he finds a simple problem like something stuck in the fan. In the meantime, I am amusing myself with my mom's little netbook here.

Note about the trip so far: I always forget about how much food I am presented with here. I go from a graduate student in the least obese state in the US, to a guest of my grandmother in Texas. This is the state that first combined unhealthy corn-and-bean-based Mexican food with unhealthy sugar-and-fat-based Southern cooking. Is the food good? Ooooh yes... However, if I am presented with much more of it, I will be forced to approach every meal by simply diving face-first into it, which, wolf or no wolf, seems a little uncouth.

Oh, and the way we all manage my grandfather is quite odd. He's lost enough of his wits that he will ramble incoherently for hours on end, but not so many that he won't notice if you rudely ignore him, so we take him in shifts, with various people walking in and becoming his new target throughout the day. Everyone finds the arrangement at least minimally acceptable, especially since it's not that hard to convince him that you are just as interested in how his remote works the fifth time he explains it to you.

I win at run-on sentences today. This is the improved version of this post.
