“Hey, guess what?”

It was about eight in the evening when they met up. Junno squinted, narrowing his eyes in thought. “You won the lottery and will be treating us to a fully paid trip to Paris or Prague or perhaps both?”

Tatsuya did give a chuckle but it was low, hesitant and heavy. “I have a boyfriend”.

“Well yeah”, Junno rolled his eyes, the happiness in his face gave Tatsuya heart pains. “I’m pretty certain I was there when it happened”.

“No Junno, I mean…”, Tatsuya paused, scratched the side of head while thinking hard, rearranging his thoughts. “Before the other day, before you came… I’ve had a boyfriend”.

Junno’s whole forehead was pulled in a crunch. “I’m really not following”.

Tatsuya scratched the side of his head again. “I have a boyfriend, Junno”.

“I heard you the first, second and third time, Tatsuya. But I’m really not understanding what you’re implying - what you’re saying isn’t adding up”.

They’d gotten their tickets and had made their way to the elevator where others also waited. It would take a while before they could openly speak again and make sense of the conversation. But the higher they went and the closer it got to them being alone again, Tatsuya could feel his heart knocking hard in his chest.

Then they were alone again.

“I forgot”.

Junno was looking at him - perhaps looking to see a glimmer of joke or whatever was happening. “Who forgets having a boyfriend?”

Tatsuya took in a deep breath, his eyes looking all around him, all the light was making everything too dazzling and a bit irritating. They should’ve chosen a difference place - he should’ve insisted they went someplace else. “It sounds ridiculous. I know”, his voice cracked, sounding more and more unsure. “It’s just that I saw you and we just suddenly got back into the rhythm of things and it wasn’t until he called me that night that I remembered”.

Junno was taken aback. “Uepi, you’re a terrible person”.

“You don’t need to tell me. I know”.

The high glass in front of them gave a good view of the city. They were high up looking out and just like this, the night was planned to have been romantic - they should’ve been kissing and holding hands or simply making hearty jokes picking at each other but instead - “Then exactly, what does this mean?”, Junno asked, the worry and uncertainty on his face was a tight squeeze on Tatsuya’s heart. “Uepi, I don’t plan on sharing you with anyone else”.

Tatsuya looked at him. “That was never my plan”, and he was earnest.

“Then what’s your plan?”

“I’ll tell him when I get the chance”.

The light was dim but the anxiety was clear on Junno’s face. “And when will that be?”

“As soon as possible”.

“That’s not a timeline”, Junno replied, a bitter laugh left throat. He then sighed, looking out as far as he could see. “I feel like the mistress of a husband pressuring him to leave his wife”.

Tatsuya looked away. “I’m really sorry”.

“No…”, Junno stepped closer. “If we’re to be honest, then I guess it couldn’t be helped. It’s been years and we so happen to meet again and suddenly got caught up in the moment. We were too happy, too restless… too selfish. It was naive of us to think it would be so simple”. He then paused as though to let it all sink in but as time passed, the silence was near palpable. “What kind of guy is he?”

“Kind…”, Tatsuya answered with a heavy sigh. “We’ve been together for over a year now and he’s just kind, always thinking about me. I’ve never found a need to fight with him”.

“So in other words, he’s perfect”.

Tatsuya looked up at Junno - his eyes direct but also melancholic. “Yeah, he is. But he’s not you”.

Junno scoffed, though a tiny smile pinned itself to the corner of his lips. “It’s that kind of unrestrained sweet talk that got us in this sticky situation”.

Tatsuya smiled. “And you? Since we’re on the topic, what important thing could you have forgotten to mention?”

Junno hummed a while in thought. “I’m clean for now. I think I’m pretty much in the clear”.

“For now? Well that’s reassuring”, Tatsuya replied with a stain of sarcasm. But he nonetheless stood closer, so close that their sides were touching.  “Koyama is a good guy, Junno”, he said, “I’ll need some time to properly tell him”.

“…Yeah”.

The rest of the evening went exactly as Tatsuya had expected. Junno didn’t resent him but Tatsuya could see him recoil a bit - like they’d both been running fast and was about to leap but had to suddenly stop themselves seconds before the great jump.

“Junno, I’m really sorry”.

“Stop saying that. If anyone should be sorry, it should be me for intruding. You clearly have something good going on here”.

“But that doesn’t mean it’s perfect”.

“And you think I am”.

“No, not you”, Tatsuya said. “But we are”.

They’re still standing side by side and so Junno took his hand and squeezed it in a silent solidarity, still looking out through the big glass.

They were in one of those communication towers. The iconic one in Tokyo that’s just beside a temple they’d earlier thrown coins, clapped and asked Buddha for each other.  The city was pretty at that time of the night. The lights dazzled like stars had come down from heaven to greet them. But even so -

Tatsuya slowly took Junno’s hands in his - but the hesitation with which he moved made everything prior feel rushed and unsure and he felt himself falling more into turmoil as his clammy hands clung onto Junno all the more.

But all the while, from the corner of his eyes Junno was watching him and watching the cityscape and the night and watching him again even more intently.

“Tatsuya, I’ll wait. I won’t go anywhere”.

“I don’t know that”.

“But I do”, Junno told him, his voice soft. “Besides, as I said, I knew this would happen”.

“No, you didn’t. Stop saying that”.

“Okay, maybe not exactly like this but come on - you’re an attractive man so why wouldn’t someone already gobble you up?”

“I’m not food, that’s why”.

Junno couldn’t stop his chuckle. “My point is, Uepi - I just knew it was all too good to be true. Meeting you again and having the world suddenly becoming perfect. I tried not to, but I saw it coming”.

Tatsuya rolled his eyes. “So in other words, you jinxed it”.

“Maybe…”, Junno replied with a low sigh. “But it’s just a minor setback”.

“Except, it isn’t minor at all. The thought of hurting Koyama is terrifying. It breaks my heart. I really feel like I’ll go to hell for this”.

“Then what do you want to do?”

Tatsuya turned to face him. “Listen to me, if they send me to war as the only way to be with you, I would go - no questions asked except, how to get there”.

“What the hell?” Junno laughed and held him tighter. He might have not noticed it but he released a breath that was longer than the Nile. “Did you get drunk from simply being in my presence?”

Tatsuya poked him in the side. “Think whatever makes your imagination run wild”.

Junno laughed as they once again walked towards the elevator to leave. “Then let’s plan”.

“Plan what?”

“Let’s meet in five days”.

“Five days? Why so long?”

“Because Uepi, by then you’ll be a single man - a single man all ready for me - ready for us to begin”.

“Oh…”.

Tatsuya won’t deny that five days was a lot faster then he’d hoped but---

“Need more time?”

Junno was looking at him so intently that any change in his face would’ve been obvious.

"No…”, he answered, “Five days is more than enough”.

But truth be told, his gut was feeling queasy and in knots.
