When Tatsuya woke up this morning, the bags under his eyes were gone, his muscles less sore and oddly, he felt well rested---- and even at seven on a winter morning, he was happy.
That’s why he knew the day was going to be great.
And sometimes, his instinct was really good.
Sometime in the afternoon while taking a shortcut through the park, a smile tugged at his lips at hearing his name being called from behind - and even before turning around to see the person who called out to him, his heart knew who and it jumped.
“Tatsuya. How nice to see you again”.
Years had passed - more years than he was happy to count, but no amount of time or space could let him forget the pleasantness of that familiar cadence.
“Junno”, he turned around, his eyes moving up and down the man before him - the vessels in his heart working overtime. “You haven’t changed a bit”.
Junno smiled. His eyes making crinkles at the sides, his lips the shape of a heart - he was all Tatsuya remembered and more. “Can’t say the same for you”, he replied. “Have you gone completely grey?” He laughed, walking closer.
Tatsuya rolled his eyes. “I see you’ve got jokes”.
Junno chuckled, took another step closer, looking at Tatsuya from head to toe. “Silver suits you. It brings out your wild yet classy side”.
Tatsuya breaks out into a smile and took his first step closer, his eyes still taking in Junno’s full form. “And here I thought you would have said black suited me better”.
Junno laughed all the more. “Well, I’m open to change”.
“I know”, Tatsuya replied without a thought, then uncomfortably shifting his weight to one side of his body, putting on a self-conscious smile on his lips. “How have things been going for you?”
Junno was always a pro at keeping the mood light and playful. “You expect me to believe you haven’t been cyber stalking me?”
Tatsuya raised an eyebrow. “I wouldn’t know where to start”.
“Uepi, you shouldn’t look at me and lie”.
It’s been years since he last heard that name so all of a sudden, nostalgia was giving him butterflies.
“You know how dunce I am with technology”, he shrugged. “Look, I still have a dummy flip phone”.
Junno laughed, his eyes shining with a sort of glamour that reached his cheeks and down his legs and he took another step.
Tatsuya swallowed, his heart a beating mess, his mind flooding with good times - years before when times were simpler and happy because they didn’t need excuses to be together.
“At least get Instagram”, Junno told him, wetting his lips, his pupils dilated, taking in everything.
Tatsuya gasped. Swallowed again, fretted about on his legs before answering. “And what the hell am I going to do with that?”
Junno made a giggling sound. “Post pictures, of course”.
Tatsuya’s right foot made a gesture to move forward, but somehow, he retreated, putting his foot back and waited - waiting for Junno to step one place closer. “And for whose benefit?”
“Mine, of course”.
Tatsuya could hear the drumming of his own heart loudly in his ears. “But you’re seeing me now”.
Somehow, Junno was soon standing only an arm’s length away, the mole on the side of his neck visible, the cologne he was wearing a faint scent of musk and tonka bean - it’s been years but his scent still put Tatsuya under hypnosis. “Then maybe I want to see you more”.
And at that very moment, Tatsuya began to dream - daydream of days when they were something close to lovers but never quite got there because---
“But will I also see you?”
Junno blinked, a ready smile pink on his lips - any step closer could result in something like a kiss. “Do you want to?”
Tatsuya shrugged, his voice low trying to play indifference. “Isn’t that how Instagram works?”
Junno chuckled. “I’m surprised you know that much”.
Tatsuya humph-ed. “Don’t make fun of me, you rascal”, he said, his lips a perfect spread of happiness, shifting his weight to the other foot. “Junno I----“
“Taguchi, let’s go”.
Behind Junno was standing someone also dressed in a tailored suit. Junno sighed, rolling his eyes. “Sometimes, I regret becoming a lawyer”, he said, sighing some more. “I’m actually on my way to court”.
Tatsuya nodded, looking past Junno. Was that man standing there all the time? “Your assistant?”
“My partner”, and perhaps Tatsuya’s reaction was more obvious than even he'd noticed but Junno almost immediately added. “Business partner, that is”.
“What the hell, Taguchi?! Let’s go”.
“Shut up, Koki. You’re being annoying”.
Tatsuya laughed. “You better go”.
Junno sighed again, his feet tapping on the ground. “Then I should go”.
Tatsuya smiled. “Yeah… go ahead”.
“No, you go ahead. I’ll watch you go”, Junno insisted.
Tatsuya looked at him, eyebrows quirked, and an amused smile around his mouth. “Years, but you’re still being strange”.
Junno shrugged. “It must be my middle name”, he grinned.
Tatsuya rolled his eyes and turned to go, not really expecting Junno to be watching him so when he just turned around checking - to soak in another glance, there Junno was, watching him keenly---- and when their eyes made four, Junno asked, “You still have my number, right?”
Tatsuya's eyes opened wider, surprise mixed with gladness tickling his inside. “Of course, not. I deleted it eons ago”.
Junno smiled, just a tiny raise of his lips, his eyes doing lots of communicating. “Then you must know it by heart. Call me”.
“It’s been years. At least get rid of that cockiness”.
Tatsuya is feeling joy - a special type that only Junno could’ve ever given him. Once upon a time they were close but then life happened and kept them busy and by the time they’d noticed it, weeks and months had passed and new people had filled their void - like a temporary fix because somehow, they never got that chance to naturally fall back into place.
Until now…
Junno smiled back, a boastful grin actually. “Well even so, I’m very pleased to know you’re not denying remembering my number”.
Tatsuya rolled his eyes, feeling exposed. “And why can’t you be the one to call?”
“Are we really doing this?” Junno laughed. It’s been years but they still bicker like an old married couple who never quite made it to the altar and the honeymoon. “Then I’ll call you”.
“When?”
Because second chances shouldn’t be wasted.
“Every day if you would like”, Junno said.
And Tatsuya smiled. “Thank goodness I won’t need to sign up for Instagram”.
Junno laughed, his smile brighter than the afternoon sunshine in Tatsuya’s eyes.
It’s been years but finally, time gave them a second chance - another page, to continue their story.
