Well, also consider this, the River in TMORS is the River fresh from graduating and spent her life researching the Doctor. I don't know if she has had additional adventures with the doctor since then but IMO at this point in time she is more like a Teenager than anything else. So, I think at this point I'm willing to fanwave all her teenage crazies cause she is still so young even though she doesn't look it. River in TMORS reminds me of Rose. Not the adult River that I love the heck out of. She's still baking at this point. I think eventually she breaks out of the hero worship and becomes the woman we see in the Library. So yeah, imagine her the 14 year old sitting in her room looking at the new kids on block poster going IM GOING TO MARRY ONE OF YOU ONE DAY
( ... )
Good points that she's essentially a teenager, although presumably Mels grew up all her life with Amy and Rory, and at that endpoint she's in her early 20s, but that's still somewhat starry-eyed about relationships, I agree.
Moffat's writing of women is a touch and go. He did give us Sally Sparrow (whose original story was meant to play out more like Amys) so we'll see, but I do agree.
Moffat's women in Coupling were interesting, too. Susan was almost never an embarrassment to the entire gender, but some of the guys' comments on there about women (not really Jeff, because Jeff is ridiculous) were what was sometimes worse. The character of Steve (so clearly Moffat's stand-in) was frequently reasonable but often a ridiculously uninformed buffoon. And Susan took him down a peg or two because of it. We don't really have a Susan on Doctor Who, and I'd hoped it would be River. :/
