I stand at the window of this great house in the south of France as night falls, the night which is leading me to the most terrible morning of my life.
"Coffee?" is the third thing she says. The ruby at her throat gleams wet and red in the candlelight. "A fine Italian roast."
"No, thank you." I am a gentleman. "You should--"
"Leave? I am no lady, Mister Krotznik. I will wait."
Laughter thrums in the ballroom. Parasites. They will be silenced.
"You will, of course, die."
"Yes." I know. I say my prayers.
She smiles. "What will you call yourself, when you return from the dead?"
I remember thorns around slender wrists, pricking blood from a dying woman. My greatest failure, waiting for the last rites of justice.
"Chloe."
