Ok, so I am back now from Utah and very glad to be back. It is
very dry in Utah, which shouldn't surprise anyone since it is a
desert. But the lack of humidity made me sick and gave me sores
in both my mouth and nose. It sucked. Ok, so heres the
trip...
Arrived in Salt Lake City tuesday at 11ish...am. Went and had
some lunch with the father's family and then drove for 7 hours to
southern Utah. We stopped first at Bryce Canyon. It is a
large valley(or canyon I guess) with millions of "hoodoos."
Hoodoos are big pillars of rock, fyi. The next day we went on a
day long horse riding trip through Red Canyon which is apparently where
some famous outlaw had a hideout...forgot who. We stayed at this
place called Ruby's Inn which is a hotel/motel/town thing in the middle
of nowhere that has its own gas station, 2 restaurants, mall, and
helicopter pad. It was very odd
Then we drove to Kanab in Utah which is somewhere again in the middle
of nowhere. The next day we went to Zion National Park...which
was sweet. Zion is a park at the bottom of a huge narrow
canyon. It was really spectacular. We did a hike up to a
place called Angel's Landing. It was a 2.5 mile hike up to the
top of a peak in the middle of the canyon. The last .5 miles on
the way up you had to hang onto chains to prevent yourself from falling
off a 1000ft cliff into the river down below. It was so
awsome. i have some pictures, but pictures never tell the whole
story.
The next day we went to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. When
we got there in the morning it was filled with smoke. You
couldn't see anything. It was really bad and we were all really
depressed. But as the day went on it cleared up and by sunset you
could see everything...including more smoke from all of the wildfires
pouring into the canyon. Apparently the canyon had been filled
with smoke for about a week and that night was the first time you could
see the other side. We were all really happy and everybody was
like celebrating on the porch of the lodge on the edge of the cliff
overlooking the canyon. It was really cool, but i definatly liked
Zion better. I'm probably the only person to say they didnt' find
the Grand Canyon very impressive. One thing I did like about the grand
canyon was that a whole bunch of families were color-coded. There
was one family who all had on Khacki pants, kiwi green shirts, and
purple bandanas. It was hilarious because tehre were seriously 6
kids in teh family and 2 parents. There was also a teal family
who were matching and some old couples who were wearing not only
matching clothes, but matching clothes they bought at the Grand Canyon
gift shop.
The next day we decided to take a small break and just do some
driving. At least that was the original idea. We went on a
60 mile drive on a dirt road through a place called Grand Staircase
Escalante. It was a park with just a bunch of rocks
everywhere. By this point I was totally sick of rocks so I just
listened to music and sat in the car with the air on when my family
went on hikes.
After we were done with that we went to a place called Coral Reef
national park or somethign like that. It wasn't a reef, but more
canyons and rocks. We had to go on a hike through a narrow canyon
that was just boring and it was a complete waste of time. I hated
rocks at this point.
Finally, we went to a hotel in Torrie. It was a really weird
hotel. They advertised that they had a pool and breakfast.
When we got there...they said we could use the pool next door at the
Super-8; which normally wouldnt' be a problem except that next door was
2 miles down a desert road. For breakfast, we had to walk to the
gas station and eat in an abandoned Wendy's. It was weird, period.
The Next day we went to Moab which is a really cool town. Before
we got there though, we had to do one more national park...of
course. We went to Arches National Park. It has stone
arches incase you didn't know. We saw some which was sort of cool
except that I was really pissed at my dad for going off the trail when
there were like 50 signs in sight that said, "Do not leave trail.
It kills the living soil." He didnt' care becuase he had to get a
picture. That led to a ton of other foriegn tourests going of the
trail and i was super pissed off at him for being stupid. While
we were leaving the park, we noticed that my brother left the trunk
open. 3 cars behind us were waving and honking at us to stop as
we were flying down the road at 45 mph. Luckily we didn't lose
anything...after driving all the way back and checking 12 miles of
road. Once in Moab we just hung out and rested since the next day
was our White Water Rafting Trip.
I already wrote one on the Rafting trip, so i'll just give a briefing
here. It was fun, not that severe. My mother fell in at a
place called "Room of Doom" and my dad was too concerned with
getting a picture to pull her back in as soon as possible.
After the trip we went back to the hotel and watched fireworks in Moab since it was the 4th of July.
The next day we drove back to Salt Lake City to spend sometime with
family. We got there for lunch and of course all of my family who
lives in salt lake, 12is people came for lunch at my grandma's
house. Not much happened but i will give some highlights.
Went to a restaurant called "the Mayan." It was the worst
experience I have ever had. To start, when they called your name
to be seated, you had to order your food. Then you stood in line
and waited while they prepared it in a cafeteria type kitchen.
Then we went and were seated after carrying our own food and drinks on
trays. When we got inside there was a highdiving pool and some
guys in speedos came out and started diving and all the girls in the
place screamed. Then some animatronic birds started singing a
terrible rendition of "Born to be Wild." I wanted to shoot
myself. It was just a bad experience...worse than it sounds like
in writing.
When we got back into Detroit, we went to our car and something
smelled. My brother had left a McDonalds Orange Juice in our car
for 2 weeks, our car being outside and in the sun most of the
time. The stuff fermented and had mold and ate away at the
cup. It was nasty. Then we had a flat tire in the parking
lot and had to change it. We got home at 1:30ish.
Ok, done now...thx for reading.
