What kind of a beta do you need? Some betas just check for misspelled words, and in the other end of the spectrum there are betas (actually editors) that check even for the cohesiveness of individual sentences. Do you need someone to help you with grammar? Should your beta check your word choices (highly recommended for writers like me that use English as a second language. Heads sprouting words are quite in need of help...)? Some betas help writers with the structure of the story, or give feedback on style. There are even people that can help a writer with ferreting out ideas. Know you needs before you go beta-hunting.

Are you willing to take criticism? It's a poor pairing if the writer doesn't follow the beta's guidance. If you happened to be one of those people that are certain that everything they write is of stellar quality, you shouldn't waste your own time or that of betas. You need a beta you can trust.

Where can you find the beta you need? I don't know, but I can give you some tips. Are you a member of any writer groups like Midnight Whispers, or communities on LJ? There are usually betas around and at least there are people that know betas. Do you like some writer's style and ideas, are you amazed by their impeccable grammar? Ask such people who helps them. Finding a beta takes time and effort, but it's time and effort well spent.
