Man, what do you say about the Crusades? So, the European nations got drunk on overpopulation and religious fervor, blacked out, and woke up 200 years later, pantsless and disoriented and having earned the enmity of all their neighbors--but also having discovered a newfound appreciation for expansionism!
Naturally, France was right at the front of all that.
