If, like me, you're feeling utterly helpless at the moment, wanting to help but don't know what to do, then here's a start:
The most useful things to donate at the moment are cash and blood:
* Donate to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal by calling 1800 811 700, or by visiting
https://www.redcross.org.au/Donations/onlineDonations.asp - the minimum donation is $5, so please donate even if that's all you can afford, as every little bit will help. Remember that all donations are tax deductible so some of your donation will come back to you, come tax time. The receipt will be emailed to you immediately if you donate online.
* Visit
http://www.donateblood.com.au/ to find your closest blood bank, and to make an appointment. All blood types will be helpful to burns patients. Not all people are able to donate blood (like myself, having lived in the UK during the mad cow years), but encourage everyone you meet over the next few days to go and donate.
Later on, you'll be able to donate food and goods. I'm looking at my cupboards and thinking "now, what do we actually NEED?". And the answer is much less than we have. I will post later when I find out information about donating goods.
