Gloriana review

Dec 04, 2008 17:06

Clive O'Connell, the reviewer from The Age attended our concert on Sunday, and below is what he had to say. It's possibly not going to get published (maybe next week) as The Age has stuff-all arts coverage these days. I added links for the words I didn't know (I'm obviously so ignorant!)...

Oh no you arent ignorant..... good god it sounds like this guy either hit the thesaurus OR has a 'word of the day' desk top calendar. I mean the Anglican church in Fitzroy.... comfortable? and yet we were ideally after crepuscular atmosphere? And he is no musician. Who refers to the fifth movement as 'movement 5'? And how can he say (although Im sure it was really really great) that someone's performance was 'remarkably authentic'... when exactly did he hear the first performance of this work?

I would kick his butt if I was his editor. Correct and creative english yes.... words that makes the reader turn the page.... not so good.

OK I'll stop now. I wish I had been there.... although my behaviour lately... it wouldnt have been missing twilight ambiance but the lightning induced fire ..... that would have made print. LOL

Yeah, but he doesn't really critique - he barely says anything other than waffle and padding. Apparently he barely knows the work so is just making up waffle to make himself sound good.

Overall it is very positive though :)

Yeah, this guy must have one padded arse, because those pews are anything but comfortable! My Dad regularly brings a cushion to sit on.

Oh, I think the 'remarkably authentic' was referring to the alto soloist's sound: she's about as Russian as my pillow here and was really struggling with the words in the rehearsal. However she has an amazing Russian sound to her voice. It's a huge voice and very appropriate for the part.

It was a great concert. If you're near a radio on Sunday 14 Dec at 3pm, tune in to ABC Classic FM (103.5) for the Sunday Live performance - that's us, in the Iwaki Auditorium. Really big for us - we've been broadcast on ABC before, but never live!

And here's me coming down with a cold :(

Sounds like it was good. Are Gloriana recording any performances, so that we Kiwi scumbags can appreciate your music? Or have you done any CDs lately?

Well done, at any rate! I wish I could have been there!

BTW, I think he swallowed a dictionary. What a wanker.

Actually, we record all our performances, so there's usually a CD floating around. At this concert there was a '2008 selection' CD (or whatever name they called it) - R produced 60 copies of it, and they sold them all! Ooh, I still need to pay for mine... That's what happens when you're good mates with the manager and we were busy drinking instead :)

Any chance of a copy for us when we're over in January? Do we have to order it in advance if there's one available? And obviously I'd prefer the recent CD!

I'm not sure whether we're doing any recordings with St Pauls, but if we do, I'll send one over!

I'll give you a plain language review, to balance all the gobbledegook:

Gloriana's performance was bloody awesome!

Hehe. I like plain language.

They've been awesome every time I've attended the concerts. Yay for musical friends! :-)
