Rachmaninoff Vespers
Composed in a mere two weeks early in 1915 while Rachmaninoff was on a concert tour to aid the Russian war effort, the Vespers is one of the great masterpieces of Russian church music and one of the composer's finest works. Drawing richly on chants from various repertoires of the Russian tradition and developing a whole new style of choral orchestration, the Vespers could be likened to vast choral symphony in which the sacred elements assume almost epic proportions. Soloists Irving Dekterev and Tania Ferris join an expanded Gloriana for this special performance. Complementing the Vespers is the Melbourne premiere of Svyati by John Tavener - a broad, meditative work in which richly-scored choral passages are embellished by haunting writing for a solo cello, played by Lachlan Dent.
