I've just got home from Gloriana rehearsal tonight, and it was so invigorating and energising I had to talk about it. I've not had a rehearsal like this for a long time, one where it really clicked and we really got it. Up to this point this year the music has been... yeah, interesting, but not... it. (I'm struggling for words here). Fulfilling. Satisfying. The music we were working on tonight was modern music, Howells and Whitacre, which both have interesting rhythms and very interesting intervals.
It's also been a long time since I've felt on top of my game like tonight. I find this challenging music such stimulating brain food. While the earlier music is all very nice, it doesn't have the challenge that this newer music has. It's also a nice reminder of why I do this whole music thing, and I wish these experiences came more often! I just hope I've not peaked too early - the concert is in two weeks. I don't get this fulfilling feeling very often in my daily life :(
There was a strange and funny moment in the rehearsal. We're doing a piece that has lots of triplets against quavers, and there was debate at one stage where the second triplet came against the second quaver (yeah, I know), and out of my mouth came "No, the triplets are each 33% of the minim, while the quavers are each 25% of it. So we come in just after their second quaver." I got many weird looks for saying that, but there was a general "ah, oh yeah". I had to just shrug embarrassedly...
