My mother's god-daughter is currently living in Thailand, and sent Mum a package today that contained (amongst other things) a piece of beautiful amazing silk. It's green, shot with blue, and it just shimmers.
So I asked Mum what she was going to make with it, and she says she might take it to a dressmaker and have it made into a formal jacket (for wearing to the opera and such). I looked at her and said "you could pay me to do it". She gives me a very doubtful look and just slightly shakes her head, and says "erm, uh, not with this expensive silk".
[As soon as she said "formal jacket" I had a picture in my mind of the design of the jacket and exactly what it should look like in that fabric, even down to the buttons. I don't know where I'd find those buttons, but I guess it's not going to be my problem.]
What do I have to do to prove myself to her? She's seen everything I've sewn - including a full length velvet formal jacket for myself (sewn about 12 years ago now) and my wedding dress and 3 bridesmaids' dresses (all done in about three weeks, too). Not to mention all the precision sewing involved in the quilts I've made.
I'm never going to be anything other than her daughter and a child in her eyes. Not capable of actually being rather good at anything.
