Happy SAD!

Keeping in the spirit of the day, and because Renee encouraged me to, my article on Singles Awareness Day that I wrote my senior year of high school. Enjoy:

February 14th: a day celebrated by couples and dreaded by singles. Most people know this greeting card company holiday as "Valentine's Day," but some of us know it by its true name.

February 14th is SAD, Singles Awareness Day. Of course, if you are one of the countless chronically single people out there, you probably noticed this already. After all, sometimes to the single Valentine's Day just feels like a day intended to make single people feel crummy.

Have you ever been alone on Valentine's Day? It is not a fun thing. Let us face it, the people who enjoy Valentine's Day the most are people who are not single. Anyone surprised here? I did not think so.

Let us analyze how the people who Valentine's Day was not intended for react to it. Valentine's Day is not made for single people. There are two types of single people: people who are single by choice and people who are single by circumstance. These people include, but are not limited to, the recently dumped, those who have suffered messy breakups and people who just can not seem to find the right person.

Whatever reason they might have for their condition, those who are single by circumstance often spend Valentine's Day examining the reasons for their being single. This is where the holiday gets its true name from, those who are single instantly become more aware of it. They start to wonder why they do not have a significant other, or they wonder about what happened last time. Why did it not work out? Why does it never work out? And more importantly, what kind of sicko came up with a holiday that makes people think about these questions no one ever wants to think about?

While no one really has the answers to these questions, there are things that singles can do to make Singles Awareness Day a less painful event. The first step is to embrace the holiday. Instead of thinking of it as a day where couples ruthlessly flaunt the fact that they are more successful in relationships you are, singles should look at "Valentine's Day" for another thing it is: an excuse to eat lots and lots of chocolate.

The one good thing about Valentine's Day is the fact that it is the time of the year that chocolate products are most readily available. Singles should celebrate this with their friends. If you happen to be single this Valentine's Day, go out and buy yourself a brick of chocolate fudge, then hog it all to yourself. Indulge yourself in the fact that since you are single, and you do not have to share your sweets with anyone. However, never forget the best thing about Singles Awareness Day: discounted candy the day after.

Happy Discount Candy Day (tomorrow) everyone!
