My family and I went to see National Treasure (starring Nicholas Cage) this evening. The basic premise is that the Knights Templar (and later the Freemasons) buried an ancient treasure and left clues throughout historical America leading to it. 'Ole Nicholas is a treasure hunter after, well, the treasure. All in all, I thought it was pretty good. Let me elaborate: it was better than Good, but it was not good enough to make the full step to Great. Instead, it took a half-step to Pretty Good, also known as Good-But-Not-Great.
While we were at the movie, however, I saw a preview for a movie that made me quite excited indeed. This was the preliminary preview for the movie based off of the book series, "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy." I have to say that I love Douglas Adam's books, and have been a huge fan for years. The books are absolutely hysterical while being surprisingly smart and comentative though it doesn't seem like it on the surface. In (I believe) the 80s, BBC made a miniseries based off the first 3 books, which was completely horrible. However, there was a radio play done that was very funny.
Unfortunately, while this movie could be very cool if it is done well, this has it's drawbacks. Lets look back to the Lord Of The Rings, or even better, Star Wars. Before they rereleased Star Wars in 1997, I could enjoy being a Star Wars nerd. However, with the immense success and commercialization that it drew, suddenly everybody and their cousin was an "expert"; they thought they knew everything about Staw Wars because they read the little cards that came with the action figures. The same things happened with LotR. I am afriad that this could happen to my beloved Hitchhiker's Guide. So... I am officially stating that I am old-school HHGTTG. If it is a huge success come May 6 2005, then the world can look back on that fact.
Now on to part three of my post: I am a snob. I was discussing the Hitchhiker's Guide situation with my family on the way back from the movie, and my parents pointed out that I'm a snob. I realized that this is absolutely true. I AM a snob. I am smarter than everybody else, and I know it. (This is of course different from an fool, who only THINKS he is smarter than everybody else.) Anyway, my parents joking comments rang true, and I have accepted this with pride. Yes, I said pride. While some people have "redneck pride", I have "snob pride." I am proud of the fact that I feel superior to those that have inferior literary or theatrical knowledge. I am proud of the fact that I know that some people are idiots compared to myself. However, I am not so much of a snob to think that I am the best of the best at everything, because I know I'm not. I know that for all of the things I'm good at, there is someone who is better.
At this point, Jason says, "and humble, too"
