One of the blogs I frequent has
a post about a man suing the State of California, because apparently for him to change his name at marriage to his wife's was a much huger hassle and expense than if his wife had changed her name to his. Utter crap if you ask me, so I wish him success.
Since there are a couple of people on my flist who are recently engaged, and I have friends who are married and don't share last names, I thought it'd be a fun link to share. Some of the anecdotes in the comments are very cute. Plus, well, I like discussing the idea of name changes at marriage. It's never made sense to me, and after my mom's second divorce I was pretty pleased that she went back to her maiden name. Though I hadn't heard the idea of combining names into a new one. Some of the combinations people posted are giggle worthy. And then there's
this comment, which made me laugh loud enough to reveal I'm not actually working right now. ;)
You can bet that, if for some reason, I ever got married, I would keep my last name. After all, my last name is mine. It's not my father's; I've made it my own. My main reason, above even that, though? Nothing to do with patriarchy or feminism or anything like that. I want my doctorate one day, dammit. And do you know how awesome Dr. Elsenheimer sounds? That's right, biznatches. :D Respect the name! Even if I don't have the title yet!
So I mentioned engagements, right? I am verrah happy and squeeful to congratulate Mindy dearest, aka
sexybee, on her engagement to her boyfriend, Mik. I've met him, and he's a great guy who's sweet and funny and has an excellently pervy mind. Yes, it's kind of sad for me to realize Mindy, who's been a wonderful friend for longer than all the friends I keep in touch with, is moving on with her life, and is going to be a wife. But really, I couldn't be happier for her, and she'll still be herself. Plus Mik knows if he hurts her I and quite a few others will come down on him like the wrath of God. Tee hee. ;D
Best part of all, Mindy? I'm already making plans for the most awesome bachelorette party of all time. >D >D >D
