old school to the core

One of the gifts I received from Christmas that's been eating holes in my time (besides BSG, omg must squee to anyone who'll listen) is a shiny white Nintendo DS Lite. It's miles better than my (pink, agh) GBA -- I can see the games I play. So wonderful! Thus far I've only played one of the two games I got for Christmas, Final Fantasy III. I played about the first hour of so of the original on a ROM, but it kept crashing my computer, so that was the farthest I got.

Still, I played enough to appreciate what a huge overhaul they gave the game. It's so adorable in the new 3D mode. The added dialogue and exchanges between the characters is cute as hell, and Yoshida's FFT-like character designs definitely fit. I'm about 8 hours in -- the person who got me the DS and the games happens to be much further than I am, but that's ok. ;) So if you've got a DS and haven't picked it up, you should!

Of course, playing FFIII means I'm neglecting XII. And while XII is a superb game, and I've got tons of other new Gamecube and PS2 games I keep meaning to get to, there's something so enjoyable about playing an old-school JRPG. Cliche as they may be, with relatively simplistic combat, I can play them for hours and hours. They're just fun.

That said, fellow DS owners! Got any recs? No Animal Crossing, though -- I won't be drawn into that particular brand of crack. And I need friend codes for FFIII to get nifty items. Stupid wifi sidequests... :p
