is David Letterman a jerk or not?
Am I the only one who thinks that David Letterman is a smarmy bastard? I've seen him only in bits, so I could be wrong... in these bits, he's usually looking self-important or reading one of his Top Ten lists whose humor I don't seem to appreciate. And I saw clips of him in American Splendor routinely having laughs at Harvey Pekar's expense, though they did seem to be reasonably gentle laughs.
David Letterman became ridiculously successful *somehow*, though, so maybe if I watched the show, I'd come to like him. I used to find Conan O'Brien a little annoying, but once I sat through a show, I warmed up to him. I rather hope that such an amazingly famous talkshow host isn't really as arrogant, condescending, and unfunny as the clips I've seen suggest.
(And here I insert a postscript about how much I appreciate Craig Ferguson for being the least talkshowey talkshow host I've ever seen, not that that says much. I also identify with him because he makes up ridiculously stupid jokes, pauses, and then laughs at them.)
