Things at the moment can be nicely categorised into Phizz, fun, work, and athletics.
Phizz is back. I collected her from the airport dazed and jet lagged and disorientated. I felt a cloud lift that had been over my heart since I walked away from her in Bangkok airport back in August. I'd become so used to that cloud that when it moved away the light it let in was blinding for a moment. She's the same girl that left, only better, stronger, braver, wiser and with so many stories to tell you!
Zorro sulked and ignored her for a couple of days and then had his own little kitten-light bulb moment and is now all over her. Literally all over her, you should see her nice clean clothes covered in white cat hair now, he made making her his again his top priority.
The night of Phizz's return I abandoned her so that I could take my Mum to see Leonard Cohen playing Sandleford winery. I'd gotten us both tickets for her 60th birthday and couldn't very well reschedule either the show, or the flight, so I was a terrible boyfriend and left Phizz alone while I was romanced and moved by the incomparable Cohen. Everything you've read about his live shows is true, the man is masterful.
Still to come we have tickets for the whole 8 hours of The War of the Roses, Amanda Palmer, and a month and a half later Tim Minchin. I'm sure there will be much MUCH more to come but it's early days yet. I'm hanging out for the ACDC world tour :)
Work is intense, the last 10 years under the Libs has left us with our collective arses hanging out all over the place and without any real capacity to respond to the rising unemployment, floods in Northern Queensland, and the fires in Victoria. As it is we've managed pretty damn well but you can imagine it's a pretty busy time to be working as a trainer of new and existing staff. I've also picked up a nice little side gig this week preparing a briefing for local community groups on the way Centrelink customers will be effected by the upcoming removal of same-sex discrimination in Federal Law.
Besides gloating messages from Canberra in December I haven't mentioned athletics much recently. I'm taking 5 training sessions every week, plus being present for the Senior competition every weekend. Monday is race pace work for the distance athletes and top speed work for the sprinters. Tuesday is a sprint session, focusing on technique either form runs or block starts. Wednesday is a set of sprints up a 150m sand hill near the beach. Thursday is my day off and gives me a chance to get home before 8pm and maybe do some grocery shopping. Friday is Aerobic Capacity work for the distance guys and speed endurance for the sprinters. Saturday Morning is Hurdles and Steeplechase technique work, with a competition on either Saturday arvo or Sunday morning. Rinse. Repeat. We're doing very well at the moment, the crew who all went to Nationals at the end of last year are starting to refocus towards the State Champs in mid March, and the ones who didn't have stayed fired up and are qualifying for this December's Nationals in droves. For the first time in years I'm going to be disappointed when the end of the season comes and we go back to Winter/Cross Country training.
It's half past midnight, and you're up to date :)
