World's End is great; I went there by public transit (bus) a few weeks ago. Take the red line to Quincy Center, then the 220 to Hingham and walk (look it up on a map). Great place to lose yourself in - everyone who went really liked it. The Greenbush Line is closer.

Try also the red line to Alewife, then the 76 to Lexington. Go past 95 (big bridge) and get off a ways down by the minuteman bikeway. Nice bike/walking path, lots of green, sheep in the earlier fall ;^)

Or commuter rail to Lincoln center, there are hiking trails around there, or Drumlin Farm is nearby (lots of raptors if you like such things - huge rehab bird exhibit). Kids, though. But there are also public trails around Lincoln Center proper.

Orange Line northbound all the way (forget, Oak Grove?). Get off, walk north on the street that the stop is on. Second? left, all the way down, right at a driveway-ish, then left up some stones to the Rock Circuit trail in the Fells. Easy, VERY isolated.

My advisor also recommends the Blue Hills - Commuter rail to there and then walk a loop.

R suggests Rockport - commuter rail to there, then walk up the coast to the Rockport quarry - very nice park with a huge quarry lake and birds and ocean.

Or if you're *really* desperate, red line to South Station, Bonanza bus to Woods Hole, ferry to Martha's Vineyard, spend a night at the youth hostel there, spend the days at the beach or whatever - they have an island bus (cheap day pass) during the summer at least, not sure about now. I used to spend ~$80 on the whole weekend. Bring your own food.

Or take a trip out to the Harbor Islands - take a ferry (look it up, I think) and then walk around an island. Lovell's Island is really nice and pretty isolated, moreso than others.

You could also go to the Arnold Arboretum or the Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Not quite out of the city, but quite accessible.
