we had this huge discussion about women in advertising [specifically mothers and wives] in my english class. my teacher felt that women today have come a long way from being only pictured within the home to now showing that she has a job.
i disagree.
women have not come a long way in advertising. especially from the typical 50s housewife motiffe. though i recognize there are depictions in the media of women working it up, they have ALSO remained within the household. becoming this superwomen of her domain where she cooks, cleans up her little boys messes [that always seem to make her ecstatic], packs lunches for the kids, and later she amazingly still has time to cuddle up with her daughter [who is consistantly in a pink tutu] and talk about girly type things *giggle*. then she's off the work...where normally they are shown as elementary school teachers, nurses or [amazingly] female cops surrounded by her fellow [male] policemen.
whereas men in the advertising perfect 'family', are stumbling over housework. can't survive without mom. messes up the laundry, does a shitty job cooking and then complains later that he just can't live without her amazing brocalli cassarole. OR its on the other extreme end where commercials will show the perfect husband who takes care of the house wonderfully until Mom has recovered [its only the 24 hour flu] and promptly returns back into the upper middle class suburban housewife mold.
another image from commercials that i cannot stand is the husband kissing his wife on the forehead. yikes.
