Lily kept in touch with Marshall and with Ted during her time in France. Marshall sent her sweet emails, and they'd talk on the phone for as long as their international calling plans would allow them (i.e. not very long). But Ted sent her letters - real letters, handwritten on fancy paper with a nice pen. Lily could almost imagine Ted sitting down at his desk and using a quill pen to tell her all about the classes, the parties, and the girls that filled his time.

It was always the same, with the girls. It'd start off as infatuation, with Ted going on about their golden/copper/raven locks and their sea-green/piercing grey/deep brown/sky blue eyes. His Doctor X persona presented this hyper-masculine image, but really Ted was kind of a girl. Lily liked that about him, though.

But then he'd mess up somehow, or the girl would just up and leave. Ted would sink into the depths of despair, and Lily swore that she saw a teardrop or two staining the pages, and, really, she shouldn't be so affected by something so pathetic. But she was. He got knocked over every time, just like it was the first girl who'd rejected him. Lily didn't know how he did it, how he kept up his naivete, his belief that the right girl was out there. She also found herself desperately wanting him to find her.

Her emails and phone calls to Marshall grew shorter and less frequent as they both got caught up in their school work. Her letters to Ted, however, became longer and more involved. She loved France, in theory, but she was lonely. She missed Wesleyan, missed her friends. But Ted always knew how to reassure her, telling her that she shouldn't give up on her dreams. It wasn't long before the days when a letter from Ted arrived became the best days of her week, when no matter what happened, the sight of the white envelope would instantly cheer her up.

Her semester ended, and she came home. Marshall and Ted both met her at the airport. She gave Marshall a hug first, but it was Ted's beaming face that she focused on, Ted that made her feel like she'd finally come home.

It passed. She remembered just how much she loved Marshall, just how much she'd missed him. But, for a while, there was her and Ted.

She still has the letters, looks them over from time to time. There's nothing incriminating in them, nothing to suggest that she and Ted were anything but friends. And they were just friends. She married Marshall, and eventually he found the right girl. But Lily still holds on to what could have been.

Awwwwww!! OP here. This was adorable! I really like the way you described the letters Ted sent to Lily with the tearstains and the descriptions of girl after girl. Thank you so much!!!
