last month we received the normal monthly phone bill, and discovered that verizon had tacked on a $2 "shortfall charge" for not using any long distance minutes. this is a free pay-per-use feature of our budget phone plan, and there had never been a fee before (also in the signup letter there was a sentence about how they have no hidden fees and it will always be free unless you use it...) so i called verizon to complain. the woman took off the fee after confirming that i wanted to cancel the 'service' that i didn't want in the first place, but said there would be a $5.60 fee on the next bill for the cancellation. there was according to her nothing i could do about said fee.

i was deeply annoyed, googled the situation, and discovered that verizon has started doing this to lots of their customers in the past several months. so i went to the fcc's website, where i posted a complaint about the situation and requested a refund of my $5.60. i figured nothing would come of it (and that the fcc would ignore it since it was for under $10), but today a girl from verizon called me about the fcc complaint and said that she will get the $5.60 credited to my account. it works! who knew?

also, tuesday, a letter arrived from the theatre department about the full assistantship. this didn't come with the accept/decline postcard, as that comes from the graduate school and arrived in a separate letter today. today's letter was dated may 10th but postmarked may 16th (yesterday), and the instructions say that my written acceptance of the new offer must be received by them by may 18th (**tomorrow**) or they'll cancel it. this isn't possible by mail, since i only received it today.

i'm going to call the graduate school tomorrow morning and tell them that it will be going out in the day's mail and should be there by monday, and offer to email or fax a temporary acceptance until the postcard has time to arrive at their office. but seriously, this doesn't show the best of planning.
