THE MODERN POP MUSIC TURNING POINT
I should have Written down my prophecy earlier before it started coming true!!
I suggested quite vocally to everybody that mid way through last year would be the new rise of pop music. andthat the next year or 2 (maybe even to 2010) will have some of the very memorable and repeatable pop songs.
Now i'm sure that with the exception of Gemma...Half of you are going "Theres no such thing as a good pop song" and the other half are saying "but what was wrong with Nelly furtado's maneater??" (that wasn't a deliberate insult to you Christian :)
The way i see it, propper good pop songs are the ones that will be repeated on gold 104 in fifty years time, catchy tunes, interesting idea's...but perhaps only interesting in the confines of a settled chord structure..
I noticed at the end of 2006 songs like Crazy by Gnarls Barkley were appearing, thats a propper song...in my opinion...not my favorite by any means, but a propper song.
Then Mika came along. I noticed him in whilst in England because he was being played 50 times a day on every radio station, but just recently australians are getting the chance to see him and the sorts of music people could produce. Again i admit i dont like every song on his album, but they're in the right direction.
A few weeks ago i stumbled across the singer KT Tunstall, who'd had very mild sucess with songs here previously, but nothing huge, she's released a song that i THINK is called Suddenly i see, which is very listenable, and got caught in my head for a good few days. I have to admit i took her at face value, and said "yep she's all part of the pop music plan" but found out later when i went searching that she's a loverly folk and acoustic player and is incredibly handy with a looping pedal (i think you'll like this one Karl hehe)
theres many more that have started to appear that i wont mention now, even things like that love generation song, which SHITS ME TO TEARS but is still a part of the 2000's pop plan. that sounds an odd thing to say, but i'm sure the 'push bike song' was a part of the olden day pop plan and an important addition to music history...but who wouldnt kill themselves if they heard that again!
Finally lets not forget our old friend Missy Higgins is releasing her new album in may. Will it be anywhere near as sucessful as her last one? or will it let her down??
I'd be curious to know if anyone agrees with this theory, and if anyone has heard any new songs that they feel fit the bill
I could be wrong, but its just my unproffesional opinion, you all owe me a pint in 2067 though..
